Hot off their performance at LOCKN’ with Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, the Terrapin Family Band made their way up the East Coast to New York for a very special gig at the Summer Stage in Central Park. Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band were joined by legendary Jerry Garcia Band keyboardist Melvin Seals and frequent collaborator Nicki Bluhm.
With Melvin Seals in the mix, you knew we were in for some JGB material. Also, the concert poster promoted a full set of Jerry Garcia Band music, so there’s also that.
The super-group kicked off with the Jerry set and treated NYC to a great selection of JGB tunes and favorite covers including “How Sweet It Is,” “Second that Emotion,” and “Señor.”
For the second set, the Phil led the group to more familiar territory with an all Dead set save for one Terrapin Family Band original—”Galilee.” The TFB original was written by Phil’s son Brian Lesh and is a beautiful song that is rooted in the Grateful Dead style. The Terrapin Family Band has come a long way over the years and is a formidable band even without Phil’s presence.
The Dead set was a doozy with “Shakedown Street,” “The Music Never Stopped,” “Playing in the Band,” “Dark Star,” “Morning Dew,” “Sugaree” and more.
During the show, Phil’s grandson Levon made his way on stage. Marc Millman captured him beside his grandfather beautifully.
