Front Row: Watch Karina Rykman Jam on “City Kids” at the Cap

This past weekend Karina Rykman and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong landed at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY. Rykman who has played at the cap before in 2019 and 2021, was the opening act for PPPP.

During her set, Karina took center stage on one of best songs “City Kids” with a massive bass solo.

Watch Gov’t Mule’s Reggae Cover of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” at Island Exodus 2024

Gov’t Mule and friends returned to Runaway Bay Jamaica for their annual Island Exodus last month. In addition to three Mule shows and a solo Warren Haynes performance, the setlist boasted shows and sit-ins from Robert Randolph, Samantha Fish, Ron Holloway and more.

On the first night, Warren and the Mule ventured deep into reggae territory with a super funky cover of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” dubbed “Iron Mon.”

Front Row: Watch Dead Ahead and Rick Mitarotonda Jam on “Eyes of the World” in Mexico

After their official last tour, Dead and Co re-grouped as “Dead Ahead” and announced a winter excursion festival in Riviera Cancún, Mexico this past January. The new line-up closely resembled Dead and Co with the notable omissions of John Mayer and Billy Kreutzmann—Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Jeff Chimenti, Oteil Burbridge, Don Was, and Jay Lane. Joining Dead Ahead on the bill was Goose lead guitarist Rick Mitarotonda, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Margo Price and Sturgill Simpson.

On the final night, Rick Mtarotonda lead the band in a gorgeous rendition of the Dead classic “Eyes of the World.”

Watch Branford Marsalis and JRAD’s Dead Set at Newport Jazz Festival

The annual Newport Jazz Festival landed at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI last weekend. The three day festival’s Friday headliner was an incredible collaboration between Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and Branford Marsalis.

The set was actually supposed to feature JRAD and Kamasi Washington, but Washington dropped out at the last minute. JRAD and the festival organizers were able to recruit Marsalis on short notice to fill in.

This isn’t Marsalis’ first brush with the Dead. Marsalis and the Dead famously collaborated back in the early 90s and connected back in 2018 with Dead and Co.

Marsalis reignited the tradition again at Newport with a fabulous 90 minute set.

Watch Animal Join Goose for “Animal” at Newport Folk Festival

Goose continued their summer travels with a set at the Newport Folk Festival. Goose landed at Newport on Saturday in the middle of the festival.

At the end of their set, Peter revealed that they were fulfilling a fan request. Shortly there after a sign blocking the drum set was dropped and revealed Animal from the Muppets on the drums. Goose plus Animal broke into the most appropriate tune in Goose’s library—”Animal.”
