Watch Light From LOCKN’ Livestream Day 1 – 6/19/2020 Video

LOCKN’, the jam band scene’s premiere festival was set to take place this weekend and feature a killer line-up including a massive 80th birthday celebration for Phil Lesh. Sadly, it has been canceled as has ever other festival this summer.

Peter Shapiro and the festival organizers may have been forced to shut down the festival, but they weren’t prepared to go quietly. Last week, LOCKN’ announced they would do a three-day festival livestream featuring both archival and live performances Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hell yeah!

The line-up for all three days is absolutely stacked and features of the all-time performances from LOCKN’s past. Friday’s line-up included a heavy dose of Warren Haynes with a set of him sitting in with Phil and Friends, Gov’t Mule featuring Ann Wilson, a solo set and the Allman Brothers Band.

Thanks to LOCKN, Relix and everyone else who made this possible!

Listen to Oteil and Friends’ Set at LOCKN’ (Neal Casal Final Performance) – 8/24/2019 AUD

Oteil and Friends’ set was one of the most anticipated of LOCKN’ this year. The lineup that Oteil and Peter Shapiro assembled was simply mind-blowing.

Oteil was joined by Melvin Seals, Eric Krasno, Neal Casal, Jay Lane, Jen Hartswick, Natalie Cressman, Alfreda Gerald, Lamar Williams Jr., Jason Crosby, Kebbi Williams, Bob Weir and Duane Betts. Wow.

Burbridge, who’s past is firmly rooted in the Allman Brothers Band and present is with Dead and Company, is one of a few musicians with expertise in both jam universes. Oteil drew on both of those influences for his set.

In addition to Allman Brothers Band and Grateful Dead tunes, Oteil and Friends performed originals, Jerry Garcia inspired covers and Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart.” The highlight of the set for me was when Duane Betts emerged and took the wheel on “Dreams” and “Jessica.”

To top it off, Oteil celebrated his birthday on the same day as his set. Bob Weir and Peter Shapiro both made a point to commemorate the birthday with a happy birthday rendition and a custom made cake.

After LOCKN’, we all learned that this would be Neal Casal’s final show. Casal passed on August 26 at the all too young age of 50. His face-melting guitar work with Circles Around the Sun on night one of LOCKN’ will forever be one of my most cherished live music experiences.

Upon learning that Casal passed, Oteil posted this on Facebook:

“I just started to really get to know Neal and he was one of those people that I felt such genuine warmth from. My heart goes out to his family, friends and brothers of the road. This hurts so terribly much. I was looking forward to seeing that smile so many more times. Rest easy, Neal Casal.”

Watch Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham Join Umphrey’s McGee for “Whole Lotta Love” at LOCKN’

LOCKN’ may have happened last weekend, but the highlights and footage keeps emerging. In addition to the free livestreams, LOCKN’ has been releasing highlights on their Facebook page.

One of the latest highlights to emerge was Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham sitting in with Umphrey’s McGee on Friday afternoon. The late Led Zeppelin drummer’s son and lead guitarist of Tedeschi Trucks Band joined the jam band super heroes for the Zeppelin classic “Whole Lotta Love.” The cover came at the end of a string of four Zeppelin covers. “Whole Lotta Love” was a bug bust out for Umphrey’s who last played the tune on Valentine’s Day, 2014 for a gap of 444 shows.

Thanks again for LOCKN’ for sharing the pro-footage of these awesome, once in a lifetime collaborations!

Listen to LOCKN’ Wake Up to Keller Williams’ Grateful Gospel on Sunday – 8/26/2018 Full Show SBD

Before LOCKN’ witnessed the reunion of Branford Marsalis and members of the Dead, Keller Williams’ Grateful Gospel roused campers who were still groggy from the late night festivities from the night before.

Keller Williams, jam band journeyman takes on a couple of alter-egos in addition to this regular act (which is anything but regular) including Grateful Grass and Grateful Gospel. Keller dipped into the Dead and Jerry Garcia Band catalogue with the help of assistance of a gospel quartet.

Highlights of the show include “Ripple” and “Eyes of the World” among others.

Listen to Bob Weir & John Mayer Join Lettuce’s Face-melting Jerry Garcia Band LOCKN Tribute – Full Show SBD

So technically the late-nite Lettuce set at LOCKN’ was already posted a couple of days ago, but got buried under the coverage of Dead & Co and Tedechi Trucks Band’s sets. If you want to watch the action, by all means go to LOCKN’ day three recap and fast forward to 14:19:15.

After remarkable sets from Tedeschi Trucks Band and Dead & Co, funk-masters Lettuce kept the party going late into the morning on Sunday at LOCKN’. The set, orchestrated by Peter Shapiro featured Erick “Jesus” Coomes on bass, vocals, Adam Deitch on drums, Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff on guitar, Ryan Zoidis on saxophone, Eric “Benny” Bloom on trumpet, vocals, Nigel Hall on keyboards, vocals and Eric Krasno on guitar, vocals. Lettuce was billed as providing a Jerry Garcia Band tribute and boy did they come through.

The set featured a ton of JGB classics and rarities including one of my favorites, “Finders Keepers.” Lettuce welcomed Dead & Co bassist out for an insane take of “Stop That Train” before John Mayer joined for a face-melting “After Midnight.” Mayer stayed out for the remainder of the set and was joined by Bob Weir for “Sugaree,” “Tangled Up in Blue,” “That’s What Love Will Make You Do,” and “How Sweet It Is to Be Loved By You.”

Mayer closed out the set with Eric Krasno and the rest of Lettuce with covers of “Cats Under the Stars” and “They Love Each Other.” When it was all said and done, the jam-heavy late-night set clocked in at nearly two hours! Other guests during the set included Kofi Burbridge on keyboards, Alicia Chakour on vocals and Mark Rivers on vocals.
