After finishing up their summer tour in Nebraska, Gov’t Mule headed to Red Rocks for one night in a bill that included the Marcus King Band and Yonder Mountain String Band. The Mule and especially Warren, has played some of their most special shows at the majestic Morrison, Colorado venue and last night did not disappoint.
After the set by MKB and YMSB, the sun had set and Gov’t Mule took the stage. Warren opened with the solemn “Traveling Tune” that usually portends more Allman Brothers action later in the set. We got a little taste of “Les Brers” in “Scenes From a Troubled Mind,” but then got a full on dose with “Whipping Post” featuring the incredible Marcus King. Hearing Marcus and Warren in the Allman Brothers dueling guitar arrangement is a real treat.
For the encore, Warren invited members from Yonder Mountain String Band as well as Marcus King for a full-fledged Allman Brothers Band jam. They opened the encore with one of Gregg Allman’s most famous tunes, “Melissa.” Gov’t Mule’s Facebook page reports that this was the concert debut of “Melissa,” which is hard to believe, but hard to argue with since it came right from the source. The Mule and friends transitioned into “Mountain Jam” before reprising “Melissa.” All-in-all, a fantastic show and all-star encore!
