Marcus King Band in on the road this winter, traveling the roads less traveled. One of their latest stops on their tour was Wooly’s in Des Moines, IA.
Three songs into their set, King lead the band in a nearly 10 minute exploration of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Mountain Jam.”

Gov’t Mule’s Island Exodus has escaped a COVID shutdown and ends tonight. The annual Jamaica excursion kicked off on January 16th at Jewel Paradise Cove in Runaway Bay, Jamaica.
The first night featured the Mule firing on all cylinders. Warren and the boys treated fans to tunes from their latest blues album and plenty of covers.

After the soundcheck to the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen last night, our We Will Get By Streaming Tour continues with the main course—the Dead’s two opening set to the one day festival.
On July 28, 1973, the Grateful Dead joined The Band and The Allman Brothers Band at the Grand Prix Racecourse in Watkins Glen, NY for Summer Jam. The triple bill, behind the efforts of legendary promoter Bill Graham had an eye popping 600,000 attendees which was broke a world record at the time.
The Dead opened the one day festival and were joined by a combination of the other band members for one of the more memorable sequence of sit in jams including “Not Fade Away,” the Allman Brothers Band’s “Mountain Jam” and “Johnny B. Goode.”
While some say it was a sloppy two sets, others revel in the show’s glory. Either way, it is definitely one of the Dead’s more historic shows and a “must-listen” on our long strange trip this summer.

The Allman Brothers Band played their last gig in NYC at the Beacon Theatre on October 28th, 2014. While it’s only been a little over five years, so much has happened in the Allman Brothers community. Gregg and Butch have passed, Derek and Susan have been spreading their own brand of southern rock, Warren has continued to earn his moniker as the hardest working man in rock and Oteil has found a new calling with Dead and Company. One of the most exciting projects to happen in recent years are sons of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts (Devon Allman and Duane Betts) joining forces for a new era of Allman Brothers-inspired music and tours.
While so much has flourished from the ashes of the Allman Brothers Band, nothing really quite replaces the real thing. While both Gregg and Duane have passed and Dickey has opted out, the remaining members of Allman Brothers Band reunited last night in NYC to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band.
Despite the fear and spread of COVID-19, tens of thousands of fans made the pilgrimage to NYC to see ABB reunite for one evening. Instead of peakin’ at the Beacon, the Brothers decided to put on a huge celebration at Madison Square Garden.
Last night’s line-up included the loan remaining founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, Jaimoe on drums, Warren Haynes on guitar and vocals, Derek Trucks on guitar, Oteil Burbridge on bass, Marc Quinones on percussion, Chuck Leavell on grand piano and vocals, Duane Trucks on drums and Reese Wynans on keyboards.
While variations of the Brothers line-up have played over the years, the core hasn’t come together since the final ABB show back in 2014. Never the less, it didn’t take long for Warren, Derek, Oteil, Jaimoe and the rest of the Brothers to find their groove.
The evening was a sight to behold. Allman Brothers Band members and family, new and old jammed deep into the evening at MSG on the best of the best of the ABB catalogue. The Brothers treated fans to nearly 30 songs during the two sets and encore.
Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another 5 years for another night of the Brothers summoning the spirit of ABB.

Phish was just one of many bands in NYC and around the world ringing in the new year on NYE. About forty blocks north of Madison Square Garden, Gov’t Mule set up shop at the Beacon Theater for their annual NYE run.
While year’s past have had very intentional themed New Years show, the Mule teased a Beatles theme weeks before the concert. For the second set, Connor Kennedy, the new guitarist for Steely Dan joined the Mule to jam on some classic Beatles tunes.
Blues guitarist and frequent collaborator Jimmy Vivino joined the Mule deep into the third set.
