Yesterday was a very grateful Thursday in New York. While Phil Lesh and Friends were rocking the Capitol Theater in Port Chester for a second night, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead kicked off it’s second run in as many weeks in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Bowl. And if you’re keeping score, add a couple of sets from Holly Bowling in Syracuse, NY.
JRAD’s regular bassist Dave Dreiwitz was MIA as he was in Chicago with his day job, Ween. Luckily Dead and Company bassist Oteil Burbridge was ready and willing to fill in.
While a lot of attention is directed at John Mayer, Dead and Company also forged another Grateful Dead member in Oteil. Of all the Dead and Co members, Oteil has arguably played the most Dead this calendar year. Burbridge kicked off the year on Jam Cruise with the impromptu Grateful at Sea set. Then Oteil did a run with one of my favorite Dead acts of the year, Voodoo Dead. Last week, Oteil found himself play a set of Dead with the Everyone Orchestra. Which brings us to last night.
In addition to Oteil, JRAD added Antibalas member Stuart Bogie on sax. Bogie actually has a pretty kickass CV that includes some incredible collaborations.
Thanks to Lazy Lightning, we have this awesome 4k footage (and more to come I would imagine) of “Shakedown Street” from the side of the stage. Oteil’s obviously feeling the groove and busts some Joe Dart worthy moves on stage.
