Watch Phil Lesh, Neal Casal and Chris Robinson’s Rip-Roaring “New Speedway Boogie” at 2016 LOCKN

Relix has slowly been releasing some great archival jam footage from the last couple of decades on YouTube this year. The latest release comes from LOCKN 2016.

Watch Les Claypool, Phil Lesh & Mike Gordon Jam on “D’s Diner” at the Jammys in 2005

LOCKN always delivers a killer line-up. 2016’s festival was no exception. In addition to two evening with Phish, Phil Lesh and Friends played a pair of evenings as well. On the final day of the festival, members of the Chris Robinson Brotherhood joined Phil for a 9-song set. For two of the tunes, blues guitar slinger Gary Clark Jr. sat in. About half way through the set, Neal Casal and Chris Robinson took the lead on the Grateful Dead classic “New Speedway Boogie.”

Thanks to Relix for the footage!

Watch Santana, Phil Lesh and Warren Haynes Jam on “Fire On the Mountain” at LOCKN’

Relix reached into their archives and pulled out a gem for their YouTube channel last week to honor Phil Lesh’s 80th birthday. Back in 2015, LOCKN’ featured two days of Phil and Friends with different guests each day.

On Friday, Phil was anchored by Chris Robinson and Neal Casal, while on Saturday Phil was flanked by two of the best guitarists in the game—Carlos Santana and Warren Haynes. The lineup was rounded out with Barry Sless, Rob Barraco & John Molo. Deep into the set, Santana and Haynes took over on the Grateful Dead classic “Fire on the Mountain.”

Thanks to Relix for the awesome footage of the once in a lifetime collaboration!

Listen to Bob Weir & Marcus King Join Steel Pulse at LOCKN’ – 8/25/2019 AUD

Steel Pulse teamed up with The Soul Rebels to deliver a poignant set on Sunday afternoon at LOCKN’. Bob Weir, who was EVERYWHERE at LOCKN‘, was also a last minute guest addition to Steel Pulse’s set.

As the stage turned, Steel Pulse and the Soul Rebels were quickly joined by Bob Weir for “Don’t Let Go.”

Not one to shy away from taking a stand, David Hinds and Steel Pulse’s set was politically charged with topics like guns and police shootings.

Later in the set, Marcus King who was Sunday’s special guest, sat in with a variety of the bands on the final day of LOCKN’ including Steel Pulse. King and Steel Pulse closed the performance with an upbeat, reggae infused cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower.”

Watch Joe Russo Sit In with Circles Around the Sun at LOCKN’

The 7th annual LOCKN’ kicked off a week ago today. One of the dozens of acts I was looking forward to seeing the most was Neal Casal’s group, Circles Around the Sun.

Originally commissioned by the Grateful Dead to create set interludes for their 50th anniversary shows a few summers ago, Circles Around the Sun’s hypnotic grooves quickly found a fan base. They subsequently released two albums and toured sporadically since making their performance debut at LOCKN’ 2016.

CATS returned to LOCKN’ and filled the coveted Garcia’s Forest slot on Thursday evening (Friday morning.) I managed to make it for the first half of the set and was blown away. Neal Casal’s soloing during “Gilbert’s Groove” was straight fire and just what the doctor ordered after a long day.

As I trudged down the path back to my camp site, Peter Shapiro was racing a golf cart towards Garcia’s Forest with Joe Russo and Tom Hamilton from Joe Russo’s Almost Dead hanging out the back. Upon arrival, Russo hopped behind the drum kit for 20+ minutes of jamming to end the set.

This was sadly Circles Around the Sun’s last performance with Neal Casal. He died at the all too young age of 50 on August 26, 2019—just four days after this incredible performance. Rest easy, Neal.

Thanks to Brian from Deadheadland Films for the footage!

Watch Susan Tedeschi Join Bob Weir and Wolf Bros at the Closing LOCKN’ Set

After three glorious days on the farm, I started my trek back home before the action started on Sunday at LOCKN’. Luckily, the Relix live stream kept me jamming the entire way home.

As he had done in the days before, Bob Weir made his first appearance in the early afternoon before the late night action started. As Steel Pulse rotated onto the stage, so did the Grateful Dead co-founder. With the help of the Soul Rebels, Weir and Steel Pulse starting jamming on a cover of “Hold Me Tight and Don’t Let Go.”

Bobby returned to the main stage later in the evening to close out LOCKN’ with two sets of Bob Weir and Wolf Bros. The one and only Susan Tedeschi joined Bobby for the second set.

It took a few songs for Susan and Bobby to find their sea legs, but when they do it’s magical. During “Sugaree,” Bobby started vocal riffing on “Don’t Tell Me That You Know Me” and Susan playfully ad-libbed back. The crowd laughed, Bobby and Susan eased up and pair found their groove.

Thanks to Relix for the preview stream that included “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright,” “Angel from Montgomery,” “Sugaree,” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.”
