Listen to Phil Lesh and Friends Ring in the New Year at the Hawai’i Theatre – 12/31/2016 Full Show AUD

While Phish, Gov’t Mule, Holly Bowling and others were winding down their celebration on the East Coast, Phil and Friends were just getting the party started in Hawaii. Lesh opted to test out a new scene for his New Years Eve run to close out 2016 and played a pair of shows in paradise. The first show on December 29th was played on Maui and then Phil and Friends island hopped to O’ahu to celebrate New Years in Honoulu at the Hawai’i Theatre.

Phil’s lineup included some of Terrapin Crossroad’s usual suspects: Grahame Lesh on guitar & vocals, Ross James guitar & vocals, Scott Law guitar & vocals, Alex Koford on drums & vocals and Jason Crosby on keyboards & vocals. Phil and Friends treated Hawaiian Deadheads to a marathon three hour show that spread out over three sets.

For those curious, Setlist.fm lists these shows as Phil and Friends’ first appearance in Hawaii. The Dead only played Hawaii five times during their long strange trip.

Listen to Bob Weir’s Full Christmas Pre-Jam Set at the Orange Peel in Asheville

Before there was the Christmas Jam, there was a full-night of music at the Orange Peel dubbed the Christmas Pre-jam. The Orange Peel is just a few blocks away from the Asheville Civic Center, but a world apart in terms of vibe. The smaller, more traditional concert club, is a perfect warm-up venue for the marathon Christmas Jam.

The acts at the Christmas Pre-jam where pretty similar to the actual Xmas Jam this year, including a great set from Mr. Bob Weir. Bobby’s lineup included Tom Hamilton on guitar, Holly Bowling on keys, Don Was on bass and Duane Trucks on drums.

The setlist was pretty similar to the ones from this fall. Bob opened up with a few acoustic tunes, including “Only a River” off his new album. The entire band then finished the set with a Dylan cover, another Bobby tune off Blue Mountain and three Dead tunes. For the last song of the set, Warren Haynes came out to sing and play guitar on “Touch of Grey.”

Instant Classic: Watch Bob Weir Sit-in with JRAD and Cover Dylan for an Acoustic Mini Set in Oakland

Many people point to Bob Weir and his sit-in (and many others) with Phish as “passing the baton” in the jam band world. I believe to some degree, he and Phil have passed the baton to Phish, but also to so many others. Bobby has said in interviews that the music of the Grateful Dead is timeless and will be played for generations to come. In his paternal instinct to teach and groom the next bearers of the Dead, Bob (and Phil) have also made an extraordinary effort to recruit and nurture young talent.

Bobby made his way across the bay a couple of nights ago to fulfill that paternal instinct and to make some great music with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. Reprising their acoustic set’s that they did at the Brooklyn Bowl, JRAD came out for a mini 5 song set in between their two electric sets. After “It Must Have Been the Roses,” the band welcomed their hero Bob Weir for the rest of the set.

Bob took the helm and shined on old Bobby standards like “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and “Black Throated Wind.”

Listen to Dead and Company’s First Alpine Valley Show – 7/9/2016 HD Audio Capture

Dead and Company started off their first of two shows in Elkhorn, WI with a huge bang. The first set included a long-overdue Dire Wolf, which was a tour debut. Bobby, Mayer and the rest of the boys were on their A-game the entire set.

The second set featured another sublime Eyes of the World which kicked off a massive jam that ultimately concluded with a Help-Slip-Frank. Wow.

Add the Dylan classic “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” for an encore and you have another hell of a show.

Listen to Phil Lesh, Chris Robinson, John Scofield & Friends’ Full Show from 5/22/2016

If you enjoyed the Phil and Friends’ “New Minglewood Blues” that I shared yesterday, you’ll definitely want to check this show out.

After performing in the backyard, Phil and Friends brought the show inside the next room to the Grate Room at Terrapin Crossroads. The lineup included all the same characters from the day with the addition of Ross James: Phil Lesh, John Scofield, Chris Robinson, Ross James, Jason Crosby and Tony Leone.

This particular Phil and Friends is especially potent. Scofield absolutely sets the tone with his fierce guitar playing and Robinson’s vocals are unreal. James Ross more traditional sound on guitar is a great compliment to Scofield’s sound. Listen to the sextet rip through 16 tunes including Ray Charles and Bob Dylan covers and a bunch of classic Dead tunes—over 3 hours in total!
