Phish picked right up where they left off on Sunday with night four of Baker’s Dozen at MSG. The foreshadowed jam filled theme promised to be jam-heavy but I don’t think anybody expected what was in store.
After the opening “Sample in a Jar,” Phish busted out their first extended jam of the evening—a nearly thirty minute “Lawn Boy” that a few Redditors aptly named “Lawn Man.” “Lawn Boy” also was highlighted by Page on the Keytar. For what it’s worth, Phish hit the ten minute mark on every one of the five songs in the first set. What’s special about this set is not the length of the jams, but the commitment by Phish to explore and experiment and challenge themselves on stage for all phans to witness. Undoubtedly this is one of the best sets of the summer if not Phish 3.0.
Usually the second set is filled with the extended jams, but after the set break, who really knew what to expect? More jams of course! Phish kicked off the set with a new favorite, “Fuego” and kept the heat at 100 from there on out. The biggest jam of the second set was a mind-bending 33 minute cover of Talking Heads’ “Crosseyed & Painless.”
To put this into perspective, last night was the first time since 8/3/03 that a Phish show has featured two 30 minute jams and only the 3rd time ever (1st was 12/31/99). And for the record, that second set Crosseyed (approx 33 min) was the longest in Phish history (previous longest was 7/29/03 clocking in at 26:44.) This show was truly one for the books.
For those phans that don’t care for jam-filled donuts, Phish threw the chompers in the crowd a bone with Julius in the encore slot, but not without sneaking in a little more “Lawn Boy.”
What a show!
