John Mayer’s Search for Everything Tour continued last night in Jones Beach, NY. The familiar format started with the full band, then Mayer played an acoustic set, followed by the John Mayer Trio and then the full band came out for the rest of the show. For people who were turned onto Mayer via Dead and Company, the John Mayer Trio is a great place to dig in. The bluesy, funky tunes are backed by bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan. They only released one album in 2005, Try!, but it’s songs have withstood the test of time.

One of the popular tracks off of Try! is “Vultures” which has become a staple of the Trio’s section of the tour. Jones Beach was treated to an especially funky version that Mayer was really getting into. Add in Mayer’s searing guitar work and you get a hell of a song. For good measure, John played the final solo with a drum stick, because why not?
