Duane Betts, son of Allman Brothers Band founding member Dickey Betts, is a budding guitar prodigy in his own right. Duane, named after legendary ABB guitarist Duane Allman, joined the Dawes’ touring band a couple of years and has been spotted sitting in and jamming around the country this summer. Most recently, Duane was part of the excellent Peach Tribute to Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks at the Peach Festival.
Last month, Duane Betts and the new blood in the southern rock scene, Blackberry Smoke, crossed paths in Anaheim, CA. Duane joined Blackberry Smoke for an awesome rendition of the Allman Brothers classic “Blue Sky.” Just as Duane and Dickey shared the solos on recordings of “Blue Sky” off Eat a Peach, Charlie Starr and Duane Betts trade solos in this cover.
“Blue Sky” is of special significance to Duane, because it is written by his father and it’s recording on Eat a Peach is one of the last recordings of Duane Allman. The song was written about one of Dickey’s five wives, Sandy “Bluesky” Wabegijig, which is not the mother of Duane.
Thanks to Eric Almy for the excellent footage!
