Teenage heart-throb turned Grateful Dead member, John Mayer continues his “The Search For Everything” tour last night where he plays with his full band, the trio and acoustic all in the same show. Last night’s stop was NYC’s Madison Square Garden.
As with shows before, John busted out some covers including a Dead cover. Towards the end of the show, after his acoustic and trio parts of the concert, John was rejoined by his full band and unleashed a grooving performance of his original “Queen of California” that bled into the Grateful Dead’s “Fire on the Mountain.”
At the beginning of “Queen of California,” John says “I love you too” back to a fan and follows up with “I also want to thank you for letting me go my own way and making some music that you may not have seen coming for a couple of records, but to me it’s some of the most meaningful stuff and I had no idea that you would embrace it the way you did. So thank you, cuz you’re letting me be the artist I want to be and I promise I’ll do it forever because of you.”
John’s departure to the Dead may have been a shock to his early fans, but judging by the reaction at MSG, there weren’t too many disappointed by the “Fire on the Mountain” cover. While John and the original Grateful Dead members in Dead and Company have professed their love and appreciation for each other, not much is said about how Mayer is ushering in a new wave of Deadheads. While Jerry and the original gang has gotten brought the Dead this far in 50 years, the enduring legacy of the Grateful Dead’s music will be in the hands of John Mayer and others.
