Gov’t Mule is re-releasing an archival Halloween cover show in a digital format for the first time. Stoned Side of the Mule features Warren Haynes leading the Mule in an incredible night of Rolling Stones covers from 10/31/2009 at Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA. Guitar slinger Jackie Greene joined Mule for the show.

Connecticut-based jam band Goose is on the road this fall, melting faces across the US. Last week they landed at the Tower Theatre in Oklahoma City, OK.
Goose treated OK to a few covers including the band who covers virtually everyone but is rarely covered—Gov’t Mule. Goose busted out “Sco-Mule” in the middle of the first set, a tune co-written with John Scofield back in 2015.

After Oteil and Friends broke the New Years run at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester a couple of nights ago. Oteil and his crew traveled down to Upper Darby, right outside of Philly and joined Gov’t Mule last night for the kick off to Mule Years Eve.
Warren, never one to miss an opportunity for a sit-in, joined Oteil and Friends during their opening set. A few of Oteil and Friends’ members returned the favor during Mule’s opening set.
Warren welcomed Melvin Seals, Jennifer Hartswick, and Weedie Braimah from Oteil and Friends along with long-time friend Captain Ron Holloway for the fourth song of the first set.
With the added firepower on the horns from Holloway and Hartswick, Gov’t Mule dove head first into the Little Feat classic, “Spanish Moon.” Captain Ron Holloway and Uncle Warren are no stranger to “Spanish Moon.”

Coming off their anticipated tour opener on the Summer Stage in Central Park, Gov’t Mule’s spring and summer tour is full steam ahead. Their second stop was last night in Upper Darby (outside of Philadelphia) at the famed Tower Theater. As with the NYC show, Chris Robinson Brotherhood opened the show.
While Chris Cornell (former frontman for Soundgarden and Audioslave) didn’t have a whole lot musically in common with Mule, his suicide earlier this week rattled the entire rock world. At 52 years young, Cornell still had so much to give, but his mark on rock music will last for years. Warren and Mule have been known to cover a wide range of genre’s including the occasional 90’s grunge song. Mule took a moment early in the first set to bust out the second only cover of Soundgarden’s hard-hitting “Fell on Black Days” to honor Cornell.
To close out the first set, Gov’t Mule welcomed Chris Robinson and Neal Casal from Chris Robinson Brotherhood. Neal and Chris gave Mule more than ample firepower to tackle The Black Crowes’ classic “Sometimes Salvation.” Earlier in the week, Chris Robinson let his mouth run on the Howard Stern show and specifically took aim at John Mayer and his brother Rich Robinson. Chris took issue with Rich Robinson’s new band Magpie Salute for being a “Black Crowes cover band.” The “Sometimes Salvation” sit-in with Mule was an interesting song choice for Robinson to cover given his comments from just a few days ago.
Mule brought the fire in the second set as well. Warren and company busted out one of my favorite runs, “Lay Your Burden Down > Smokestack Lightning > Lay Your Burden Down” towards the end of the set.
For the encore, Mule broke a little from tradition and only Warren and Danny Louis came out. The pair did a beautiful rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” before welcoming out Abts and Carlsson for the gritty tune off the new album, “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground.” The Blind Willie Johnson cover was the concert debut for Mule. I’m looking forward to this being a regular in future Mule shows.

90s grunge supergroup Temple of the Dog, fronted by Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, launched their first ever tour last week in Philly. The group formed in 1990 and put out their one and only album in 1991. Despite the success of songs like “Hunger Strike” the group never toured and Chris Cornell went on to find success with Soundgarden later in the 90s.
On the 25th anniversary of their one and only album, aptly named Temple of the Dog, the band has embarked on an 8-date national tour. If you are thinking about scoring tickets to one of the shows, good luck – they are all sold out. The first stop and first ever concert for Temple of the Dog was last week in Philly at the Tower Theatre.
Among Temple of the Dog originals and Mother Love Bone covers (half of Temple of the Dog is from Mother Love Bone), the band busted out covers by David Bowie, The Cure, Syd Barrett, Free, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

The choice of ecletic covers was a real treat. One would assume that a band that released their only album in the era and style of grunge, would cover grunge acts like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, etc. Temple of the Dog took a different route and nailed it. The power combo of Chris Cornell on vocals and Mike McCready on guitar is a match made in heaven.
