Got the summertime blues? Go on a long, strange tour with me through time. Every day in the month of July, we’ll feature a vintage recording from the Dead. Tune in on YouTube and join the chat as we explore the wonders of summer tours past. We will get by, we will survive!
Our next stop on the We Will Get By Streaming Tour is the summer of 1973. The Dead only had a handful of dates in July of 1973.
By the end of the month on the 27th the Dead made their way to Watkins Glen for the historic show set to take place on the 28th. Arriving the day before, Jerry and the boys took to the stage mid-day for a soundcheck. Faithful fans from all over the Northeast gathered the day before and were set to camp before the big show. What they didn’t anticipate was scoring the free soundcheck which morphed into a full-fledged concert.
The most memorable jam that makes this recording so historic is the massive 20 minute jam that preceded “Wharf Rat” in the second set. Also, the “Bird Song” in the first set is among my favorite.
