Watch Billy Strings’ Stirring Cover of “Wharf Rat” at the Capitol Theater

It’s hard to believe that at this time last year, live music was still alive and well. Billy Strings marked the one year anniversary of his show at the Capitol Theater last January with a release of a jaw-dropping Dead cover from the show.

Strings’ bluegrass infused cover of “Wharf Rat” was simply sublime. Billy released the song not only to mark one year since he played the Dead classic at the Cap, but also to promote a 6-night stand at the Cap that Strings is embarking on in February. The 6 dates of the run next month coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Dead’s 6-night run at the Cap back in 1971.

The Grateful Dead have released a couple of videos on their YouTube channel today including a fantastic recording from the Cap on February, 18 1971.

In support of the 50th Anniversary release of the Dead’s legendary American Beauty, the GD YouTube Channel has shared the live recording. of “Wharf Rat” from that February night at the Cap.

Our next stop on the We Will Get By Streaming Tour is the summer of 1979. On August 5th, the Dead played their second show of a two night run at the Oakland Auditorium in Oakland, CA. This two night run kicked off a few west-coast dates after a quiet July for the band.

This show has plenty of gems including a terrific “Franklin’s Tower” in the number two spot of the first set. Also check out the awesome “Scar > Fire” jam to kick off the second set as well as “Althea.”

Watch Rock My Soul: A Jerry Garcia Birthday Celebration

Jerry Garcia would have been 78 years young on this day. While we lost Jerry way to soon, his birthday serves as an opportunity to celebrate his life and his music.

Fans.com and a lot of other folks came together to create a special streaming celebration this year. The festivities kicked off today at 1 PM with a performance of Phil and Friends playing “Sugaree.” The line-up includes over 50 of your favorite Dead and Jerry tunes performed by the best of the Jam scene today.
