Listen to Bob Weir’s Funky Return to New Orleans with George Porter Jr. – 4/18/2017 Full Show AUD

Bob Weir continued his Campfire tour with a stop in New Orleans. The show featured the same format as it has in the past with Bobby opening up the show solo on the acoustic guitar. What was different about the NOLA show was his song selection. Instead of opening with a couple of ballads or Dylan tunes, Bob got the Saenger Theatre rocking right from the opening “Walking Blues.” Bob didn’t wait to drop the funk on New Orleans either and busted out an acoustic version of “The Music Never Stopped.”

Per the tour format, the rest of the band joined Bob for the rest of the set for a variety of tunes, mainly from Weir’s 2016 release Blue Mountain.

For the second set, Bobby and gang played one hell of a setlist including “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Friend of the Devil” and a “China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider” to finish out the set. The real treat came when NOLA native and founding member of The Meters joined Bob and the Campfire band on stage for “Sugaree” and “Birdsong.” Porter Jr. last joined Bobby on stage at the Christmas Jam last December for a killer “Sugaree” as well.

Instant Classic: Watch Bob Weir Join Phil Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band to Celebrate Terrapin Crossroads 5th Anniversary

Fast forward to 24:30 for the start of the show.

Grateful Dead founding members, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh have pretty much done their own thing since Further’s last tour and Fare Thee Well. Bob has been busy with Dead and Company and his Camp Fire project over the last couple of years, while Phil has kept to the coasts to play with an ever-revolving host of friends. The last time that Bobby and Phil shared the stage, I believe was on Jackie Greene’s birthday bash in San Francisco (check out the full show audio from that show – it’s awesome.

Watch Bob Weir join Phil Lesh for a Surprise Acoustic Set last Spring at The Backyard at Terrapin Crossroads

Last night, Bob and Phil reunited once again, this time to commemorate the 5th anniversary of Phil’s venue, Terrapin Crossroads. The show was announced last minute and was free – an homage to the dozens of free shows the Dead put on so many years ago. While Terrapin Crossroads does have a larger stage, Bob, Phil and the Terrapin Family Band chose to rock out in the bar.

The house was packed for the free show and Bob and Phil didn’t disappoint. Bob, Phil and the Terrapin Family Band rocked the bar with two sets of classic Dead tunes. The band even tucked in one of Bobby’s new tunes, “Gonesville” into the opening set. Terrapin Crossroads usual suspect, Nikki Bluhm hopped on stage for “The Music Never Stopped” and the evening ended with the classic encore cover of “Johnny B. Goode.”

Not a bad way to spend a Monday night, huh?

Front Row: Watch Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band’s Wild “China Cat > Music Never Stopped” & More at the Terrapin House Party

After a run at the Brooklyn Bowl, Phil is back in his old stomping grounds, Terrapin Crossroads. A couple of nights ago, Phil played a gig titled “Terrapin House Party” with the Terrapin Family Band Ross James, Nicki Bluhm, Jason Crosby & Alex Koford, with a special guests, Neal Casal and Nicki Bluhm.

In all, Phil and friends rocked the Terrapin Crossroads bar with three sets of Dead tunes and covers. Awesome footage of “China Cat Sunflower > The Music Never Stopped” and “Truckin'” have surfaced and reveal a versatile line-up with a ton of energy. The seat we get for “China Cat Sunflower” shows Neal Casal’s amazing, yet effortless guitar playing up close.

For “Truckin'” we are sitting Phil-side and are treated to 14+ minutes of hard-rockin’ bar-blues.

“Truckin'” slips into a serious “West LA Fadeaway” groove. For both of these tunes, Danny Click sits in and adds extra guitar firepower.

Listen to JRAD’s After Midnight Sets at Dominican Holidaze – 12/4/2016 Full Show SBD

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead along with a crew of other jam bands stormed the Dominican Republic last December for the weekend-resort festival Dominican Holidaze. Umphrey’s McGee, STS9 and The Disco Biscuits may have been the headliners, but JRAD kept the party going, well past midnight.

This show technically was a late night show scheduled for the 4th, but JRAD didn’t start their first set until 12:01 AM. And they kept the party going with two sets and an encore that stretched past 3:00 AM! What could be better than a “Shakedown Street” at 3:00 AM on the beach in Punta Cana?

This is an incredible setlist with tons of teases and treats tucked in between. Included in the recording is the public soundcheck that JRAD did earlier in the day around 1:30.

If you aren’t familiar with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, their lineup is Joe Russo on drums and vocals, Tom Hamilton on guitar and vocals, Scott Metzger on guitar and vocals, Marco Benevento on keyboards and vocals and Dave Dreiwitz on bass.

After falling in love with Voodoo Dead, this fantastic recording from Joe Russo’s Almost Dead pops up and we can fall in love all over again with JRAD. It’s 2017 and we have JRAD, Voodoo Dead, DSO, Phil and Friends, Dead and Company and so many more Dead acts—gonna be a grate year for Deadheads!

Listen to Phil Lesh and Friends Ring in the New Year at the Hawai’i Theatre – 12/31/2016 Full Show AUD

While Phish, Gov’t Mule, Holly Bowling and others were winding down their celebration on the East Coast, Phil and Friends were just getting the party started in Hawaii. Lesh opted to test out a new scene for his New Years Eve run to close out 2016 and played a pair of shows in paradise. The first show on December 29th was played on Maui and then Phil and Friends island hopped to O’ahu to celebrate New Years in Honoulu at the Hawai’i Theatre.

Phil’s lineup included some of Terrapin Crossroad’s usual suspects: Grahame Lesh on guitar & vocals, Ross James guitar & vocals, Scott Law guitar & vocals, Alex Koford on drums & vocals and Jason Crosby on keyboards & vocals. Phil and Friends treated Hawaiian Deadheads to a marathon three hour show that spread out over three sets.

For those curious, Setlist.fm lists these shows as Phil and Friends’ first appearance in Hawaii. The Dead only played Hawaii five times during their long strange trip.
