Listen to Oteil and Friends’ Set at LOCKN’ (Neal Casal Final Performance) – 8/24/2019 AUD

Oteil and Friends’ set was one of the most anticipated of LOCKN’ this year. The lineup that Oteil and Peter Shapiro assembled was simply mind-blowing.

Oteil was joined by Melvin Seals, Eric Krasno, Neal Casal, Jay Lane, Jen Hartswick, Natalie Cressman, Alfreda Gerald, Lamar Williams Jr., Jason Crosby, Kebbi Williams, Bob Weir and Duane Betts. Wow.

Burbridge, who’s past is firmly rooted in the Allman Brothers Band and present is with Dead and Company, is one of a few musicians with expertise in both jam universes. Oteil drew on both of those influences for his set.

In addition to Allman Brothers Band and Grateful Dead tunes, Oteil and Friends performed originals, Jerry Garcia inspired covers and Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart.” The highlight of the set for me was when Duane Betts emerged and took the wheel on “Dreams” and “Jessica.”

To top it off, Oteil celebrated his birthday on the same day as his set. Bob Weir and Peter Shapiro both made a point to commemorate the birthday with a happy birthday rendition and a custom made cake.

After LOCKN’, we all learned that this would be Neal Casal’s final show. Casal passed on August 26 at the all too young age of 50. His face-melting guitar work with Circles Around the Sun on night one of LOCKN’ will forever be one of my most cherished live music experiences.

Upon learning that Casal passed, Oteil posted this on Facebook:

“I just started to really get to know Neal and he was one of those people that I felt such genuine warmth from. My heart goes out to his family, friends and brothers of the road. This hurts so terribly much. I was looking forward to seeing that smile so many more times. Rest easy, Neal Casal.”

Listen to Nels Cline, Scott Metzger and More Shred at Woodstock 50th Anniversary – 8/24/2019 AUD

While the official Woodstock 50 concert fizzled and never came to be, there were plenty of Woodstock anniversary celebrations. One of those happened last weekend at The Colony in Woodstock, NY.

The Alternative Guitar Summit assembled for a concert dubbed The Music of Woodstock 50 Years Later. This show has been done before throughout the year at various venues and line-ups. Various guitarists own various Woodstock acts over two sets. The August 24th line-up was as follows:

Listen to Gov’t Mule’s All-Star Woodstock Tribute at Mountain Jam – 6/15/2019 AUD

While all the drama has unfolded around Woodstock’s 50th anniversary festival this summer, the real tribute to the iconic music festival took place at Mountain Jam. Gov’t Mule’s second set of the festival took place on Saturday night and was the highlight of the festival.

The entire set was dedicated to the music of Woodstock and guests were abound. Mule didn’t just play the hits, but went deep into the catalogues of the bands that ruled in the summer of ’69. Lukas Nelson joined the Mule for some added guitar fire power on a handful of tracks including the Grateful Dead’s “Dark Star” and Buffalo Springfield’s “Mr. Soul” among others.

For the cherry on top, Warren treated Mountain Jam to a 20+ minute take on Jimi Hendrix’s masterpiece “Voodoo Child.”

Watch Oteil and Taz Absolutely Destroy “Lovelight” on NYE in Brooklyn – 12/31/2018 Full Show AUD

Oteil, who started off the New Years runs four days earlier, was back in New York to celebrate NYE. Oteil and his crew were ringing in the new year at the Brooklyn Bowl with very special guest, Brandon “Taz” Niederauer.

Oteil’s line-up included Melvin Seals, Eric Krasno, John Kadlecik, Jay Lane, & Jennifer Hartswick plus Natalie Cressman & Weedie Braimah.

After Oteil and friends counted down to 2019, they burst into “Lovelight.” Taz took center stage with an absolutely blistering guitar solo. Oteil’s look as Taz was jamming is priceless. Next up, Oteil with Taz in tow busts out one of my favorite Jerry Garcia Band tunes, “Express Way To Your Heart.”

The much anticipated New Year runs have officially begun. Oteil and Friends announced a few months ago that they were extending their three night run to a five night run. The fun kicked off at the Capitol Theatre last night and was livestreamed for free courtesy of Relix.

Oteil Burbridge was joined by one hell of a line-up including Melvin Seals, Erica Krasno, John Kadlecik, Jay Lane, Jennifer Hartswick, and Weedie Braimah.

The two sets included Oteil Burbridge originals, Jerry Garcia Band classics, plenty of Grateful Dead and some great covers including tunes by Bob Dylan, John Fogerty and The Band.
