Listen to Greensky Bluegrass’ Glorious Grateful Dead Set in Winston-Salem

Greenky Bluegrass, one of the juggernauts in the bluegrass scene, casually drops killer covers in nearly all their shows. However, on Casual Wednesdays, GSBG performs an entire cover set. This past Wednesday, they treated Winston-Salem to an entire set of Grateful Dead.

Dobro player Anders Beck opened the second set by explaining exactly what Casual Wednesdays are. In addition to being a GSBG, Anders went on to profess his love for Wednesdays and spread a rallying call for us all to embrace and love Wednesdays. Then without delay, Greensky Bluegrass jumped into a delicious set of bluegrass flavored Dead, starting with “Eyes of the World.”

GSBG marched on with a soulful “Black Muddy River” before dialing it back up on “Mr. Charlie.” The set also included “Friend of the Devil,” “China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider” and a huge “Cassidy” sandwich complete with healthy helpings of “Cryptical Envelopment” and “The Other One.” Top the set off with a “Shakedown Street” encore and you have yourself a hell of a Grateful Dead set.

Listen to Holly Bowling Celebrate Phish’s Album Billy Breathes’ 20th Birthday at the Cutting Room – 12/30/2016 Full Show SBD

While there was plenty of afterparty action after the Phish shows, Holly Bowling put on a remarkable set of Phish tunes on the grand piano before the MSG show on 12/30. And Holly didn’t play just any set of Phish tunes, but she paid tribute to one of my favorite Phish albums, Billy Breathes by playing the album in it’s entirety.

It’s hard to believe that Billy Breathes is 20 years old. The album has Phish tunes that have withstood the test of time like “Free,” “Theme From the Bottom,” “Taste,” and “Prince Caspian.” Even if you aren’t a Phish fan, you have undoubtedly seen the album cover of Billy Breathes which is an extreme fish-eye close-up of Phish bassist Mike Gordon.

Holly played the album like you’ve never heard it before—on a grand piano. For good measure, Holly through in a little Dead at the end of the set with the bonus “Cryptical Envelopment>Other One>Cryptical Envelopment.”

The John Mayer sit-in set, the acoustic sets on the bowling lanes, the 27 minute “Terrapin Station Suite” – there are so many highlights from JRAD’s run at the Brooklyn Bowl last weekend.

Watch Greensky Bluegrass Perform a Soulful “Black Muddy River” Encore at the Capitol – 9/17/2016 Full Show AUD

Greensky Bluegrass has been known to bust out a Dead tune or two during their shows, but this weekend at the Capitol theater was something else entirely.

At the top of the second set, Greensky busted out a Cassidy > Cryptical Envelopment > The Other One> Cassidy. Not your typical Dead cover by any stretch of the imagination.

While the before-mentioned second set opener is awesome, the Dead cover of the evening was a soulful rendition of “Black Muddy River” performed as the second song of the encore. The song gives me chills every-time I hear it.

Listen to Phil Lesh, Mike Gordon and Friends’ Big Bass Bash Show – 7/17/2016 HD Audio Capture

While Dead and Company are touring from the west coast, to the east coast and everywhere in between, Phil Lesh has been staying local and kicking out the jams at Terrapin Crossroads. Before Phish had their run in San Francisco, Mike Gordon joined Phil Lesh and friends at Terrapin Crossroads for a show dubbed “Big Bass Bash.”

In addition to Mike Gordon, Phil was joined by John Molo, Jackie Greene, Jason Crosby, Barry Sless, Nikki Bluhm, Andy Hall and Andy Falco.

It’s not uncommon for two guitarists to share a stage, but it’s rare to have two legendary bassists share a stage for an entire show. And what a show it was. Phil & Phriends played a ton of Dead and mixed in a couple of classic Phish tunes like Funky Bitch and Yarmouth Road.

I shared the great “Shakedown Street” opener a couple of days ago, but the sound on this recording really showcases the two-bass guitar attack.
