Phil Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band did a rare show outside of NYC and the Bay Area last night. The gig was part of a four-show Halloween run that Phil is doing with the Terrapin Family Band, Nicki Bluhm and Robert Randolph. After DC, Lesh and the gang are headed up the East Coast to Camden, Asbury Park and finally the Cap in Port Chester, NY.
In the last few weeks, D.C. has a new venue perfect for acts like Phil and Friends. The Anthem is a state of the art venue that can hold approximately 6,000 people—about three times the size of another popular D.C. venue, the 9:30 Club. According to fans in the venue, the sound is incredible. While the Foo Fighters were the first to play the venue earlier in the month, last night’s show was the first to have an official taper section.
Nicki Bluhm and Robert Randolph played the entire evening with Phil and the Terrapin Family Band. Randolph’s pedal steel guitar gives the music a perpetual “church jam” feel. During the second set, New Orlean’s Preservation Hall Jazz Band joined the band for the majority of the set and really gave the band a swagger. PHJB did a couple of songs half-way through the set before Phil and Friends came back for a monster “Lady With A Fan > Terrapin Station > Terrapin Transit > At A Siding > Terrapin Flyer > Jack O’ Roses.”
The band finished out the evening with a “Ripple” encore.
