Leftover Salmon played the last day of the Hangtown Music Festival at the end of October. The four day festival featured Railroad Earth, Greensky Bluegrass and Dark Star Orchestra. The 7th annual festival also included Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real.
Lukas, Willie’s son, sat-in for some Neil Young covers to create one delicious Leftover Salmon recipe. Halfway through the set, Lukas came out for a sprawling and eerie at times version of Young’s “Down By the River.” Lukas’s guitar playing is so deliberate and demands your attention.
The next tune in the Neil Young cover sandwich was Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground.” An odd choice on paper, but in the set it was a good antidote to the melancholy Young tunes.
For the second Neil Young cover, Lukas Nelson and Leftover Salmon tackled a rarely covered Young song—”Alabama” off of his quintessential fall album, Harvest. “Alabama” is easily one of my favorite Neil Young songs and Lukas & Leftover Salmon do it justice.
