Tom Hamilton and Holly Bowling teamed up for a double bill at the Ardmore Music Hall on Wednesday. Hamilton opened with a short set before Holly launched into her signature Grateful Dead and Phish grand piano arrangements.
While Holly has sat in with Phil and Friends among other bands before, it’s rare for anyone to join her during a Holly Bowling set. After Holly sat-in with Tom during his set, Hamilton repaid the favor and joined Bowling on the acoustic guitar for a sprawling, gorgeous “Eyes of the World > Slipknot! > Eyes of the World > Crazy Fingers.” The jam ended the first set and was beautiful.
In the second set, Holly reprised a debut she had made a few weeks back—”Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails. While NIN doesn’t seem to fit in with the rest of her cannon, “Hurt” is a heartbreaking beautiful song that was covered by Johnny Cash as well.
