The Grateful Dead have released some more great footage from “the closing of Winterland” as part of their All the Years Live YouTube series. The 1978 New Year’s Eve show was the final performance in the history Winterland Arena in San Francisco.
Earlier in the year, the Dead released a massive “Sugar Magnolia > Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain” from the same show.
The 18+ minute Buddy Holly jam was and remains a staple of Dead shows. Starting out slow and measured, Jerry passes the baton to John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service for a solo as well as Bobby for a slide guitar solo. Lee Oskar, who plays harmonica for War, also has a turn soloing.
Here is what Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux said about the performance—”Another gem from the Classic Closing Of Winterland show, this rendition of Not Fade Away is long, powerful, and fun, filled with terrific solos, special guests, and inspired playing, despite the very late hour of the performance. Followed by another rocker, Around and Around, the Dead would leave enough gas in the tank to later play a third set that featured Dark Star, St. Stephen, and much more.”
Thanks to the Grateful Dead for this great footage!
