The Allman Betts Band, on their inaugural tour, rolled into Staten Island at the St. George Theater last night. The band, named for the frontmen Devon Allman (Gregg Allman’s son) and Duane Betts (Dickey Betts’ son) also includes Devon, Duane, Berry Oakley Jr. (son of original Allman Brothers Band bassist Berry Oakley), slide guitar virtuoso, John Stachela and DAP percussionists R. Scott Bryan (Sheryl Crow) and John Lum.
Singer-songwriter and frontman for Rusted Root, Michael Glabicki kicked off the action in the gorgeous St. George Theater. In addition to his solo material, Glabicki busted out some Neil Young and of course, Rusted Root’s timeless “Send Me On My Way.”
Devon, Duane, Berry Jr. and the rest of ABB sauntered onto the stage around 9 PM. After a couple of tunes, the band warmed up, settled in and played one hell of a show for Staten Island.
Duane helped start the fire with the first ABB tune of the night, “Blue Sky.” Both Duane and John’s slide guitar solos were incredible. In addition to “Blue Sky,” Allman Betts Band jammed on “Ain’t Waistin’ Time No More,” “Midnight Rider,” and more.
For the encore, Devon led a sing along of the title track of the Allman Betts Band forthcoming album, Down to the River. After some convincing from the crowd, ABB pulled an “audible” and treated Staten Island to the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street.”

Thanks to me for the video and photo! Sorry for the shaky footage on “Shakedown Street.” After sitting the entire show (everyone in the theater was sitting), I couldn’t wait to boogie.
