Phish completed one of the most impossible and historical runs in rock and roll history last year. 13 shows over a two week period at Madison Square Garden without repeating a single song. One of the more praise-worthy nights of the Baker’s Dozen run was night four, the jam-filled donut theme show.
Without a doubt, the highlight of night four was the unexpected extended “Lawn Boy.” Phish.net’s setlist notes gives a the rundown of the mighty “Lawn Boy”:
Page keytar solo + sharp and funky groove + dark and lovely Mike-driven minor-key rocking + smooth turn into major-key bliss featuring a sustained note from Trey and excellent piano from Page + blastoff into a charging fiery jam that devolves into spaciness + immense playing from Trey as the band drives towards a massive peak + delicate finale and > into “My Friend, My Friend” = an all-time jam. Yes, in “Lawn Boy”.
Yea, it was pretty epic. The jam spawned the phrase “Is this still lawn boy?” that made it’s way onto a t-shirt that Trey wore later in the Baker’s Dozen run.
Thanks to LazyLightning for the awesome 4k footage and the awesome summer-time memory!
