While Bob Weir was crisscrossing the US this summer with Dead and Co, Phil Lesh was content to hold court on the coasts with a short run in Colorado. On America’s Independence Day, Phil put on a special show with the Terrapin Family Band in the backyard of Terrapin Crossroads. The Terrapin Family Band line-up includes Grahame Lesh, Ross James, Jason Crosby and Alex Koford.
Among the Dead tunes and covers they played was this badass version of CSNY’s “Ohio.” The protest anthem was originally written by Neil Young and was written in response to seeing the photos of the Kent State shooting in Life magazine. The tune took CSNY only a few takes to get write in the studio.
On the cover, guitarist Ross James rips into the solo with authority and makes the song his own. Phil is feeling it too, rocking a button down with American flag stallions that only Phil could pull off.
