Dead and Company bassist Oteil Burbridge has reprised Oteil and Friends for a couple of shows in January that were postponed in November. Last night’s show at Le Poisson Rouge was a sold out affair and featured some of the finest musicians versed in the Dead on the road today including Scott Metzger, Melvin Seals, Alfreda Gerald, John Kadlecik, Weedie Braimah and Jay Lane. Scott Metzger from Joe Russo’s Almost Dead has stepped up to fill one of the lead guitar roles that was played by Eric Krasno on Oteil’s inaugural tour last November.

The vibe of an Oteil and Friends show smacks of a vintage Jerry Garcia Band show. Oteil and more specifically Alfreda Gerald knocks “How Sweet It Is” out of the park.

Oteil also played plenty of Dead tunes including “Althea.”

One of the highlights of the evening was Oteil taking the lead vocals on the classic Dead song, “To Lay Me Down.” The rowdy hall hushed as Oteil sang and the acoustic guitar plucked out the opening notes of the timeless tune.

Oteil and Friends have another two shows, including a sold out one at the Brooklyn Bowl before Oteil gears up for Dead and Company’s three show run in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
