Watch Dark Star Orchestra Jam on “Estimated Prophet > Eyes of the World” at the Warfield

Grateful Dead tribute act Dark Star Orchestra kicked off their west coast winter tour leg earlier this week. The west coast run included a pair of gigs at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco.

For night two, DSO recreated a great show from 1978 in Jacksonville, FL. The second set was absolutely jam-packed with hits including “Estimated Prophet > Eyes of the World.”

Watch Trey Anastasio Join Phil Lesh For Epic Show at Warfield – 4/16/1999 Video

Phil Lesh and his ever changing cast of Friends has been the one constant since Jerry Garcia passed in 1995. Regardless of the line-up, we can count of Phil and Friends to deliver a pair of outstanding Dead sets with some classic rock covers.

In 1999, Phish frontman Trey Anastasio hooked up with Phil for three nights at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. These three nights culminated in one of the best Phish and Dead crossover moments in history. In addition to Trey Anastasio, the rest of the Friends line-up included Steve Kimock on guitar, Phish member Page McConnell on keyboards, John Molo on drums and Donna Jean Godchaux on vocals for a handful of tunes.

The second night of the run started off with a blazing “Help on the Way > Slipknot > Franklin’s Tower” and never looked back. Trey and Steve Kimock’s guitar chemistry is undeniable.

Melvin Seals and JGB (Jerry Garcia Band) have carried on the great music and spirit of the Jerry Garcia Band for the decades since his passing. Melvin invited a couple of friends to join JGB for a very special occasion this past weekend at the Warfield in San Francisco.

The Warfield was practically a second home for Jerry Garcia. Jerry amassed over 100 shows at the historic theater between Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band gigs. Melvin Seals and JGB celebrated Jerry’s legacy at the Warfield by recreating the May 5th, 1988 Jerry Garcia Band show. Oteil Burbridge, Stanley Jordan and Dave Ellis joined the JGB line-up for some added firepower.

Among the JGB the Dead classic played were “Eyes of the World,” “Stella Blue,” “Don’t Let Go,” “To Lay Me Down,” and “Get Out of My Life Woman.”

Jackie Greene celebrated his 36th birthday last month in style at the Warfield. How many other musicians could count both Bob Weir and Phil Lesh in attendance at their birthday party?

The show included killer jams including “Dark Star > I’m So Gone > Dark Star,” “Shakedown Street > Another Brick in the Wall > Shakedown Street” and so many more.

I’ve been accused of using the term “instant classic” too much here on Jam Buzz. Well, there is no doubt about this one. This will be a show we are streaming for years to come.

Thanks to unbrchn for the amazing recording. I’ve been waiting for a while for one of these to pop up on the boards and according to him, he was the only taper at the show!

Watch Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir Perform a Heart-wrenching Acoustic “When I Paint My Masterpiece”

“Jerry Garcia and Friends” performed an acoustic set at an AIDS benefit concert hosted by Joan Baez back in December of 1987. The set was short, but how sweet it sounded.

Jerry’s “friends” for the show included Bob Weir and John Kahn. The MC introduced Jerry and Bob with a profound thought that even resonates today—what if Jerry Garcia were to run for president of the United States?

Jerry and Bobby kick the performance off with a gorgeous version of “When I Paint My Masterpiece.” Drugs and time have visibly taken their toll on Jerry. As you’ll hear in the opening lines, it has also taken a toll on his voice. But soon after Bob and Jerry connect and create the sweetest of harmonies.

Joan Baez sat in for the second half of the set. Here is the setlist for those of you keeping score:
