While the Shakedown Stream is on hiatus this week, the Dead have continued releasing great archival footage via their All the Years Live YouTube series. The latest installment comes from the Dead’s stop at Buckeye Lake in June of ’93.
Out of “Drums” and “Space,” emerged an unstoppable “The Wheel” which turned into the often covered Dylan classic “All Along the Watchtower” that features some great soloing by Jerry. Here is what Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux has to say about the performance, “The Wheel debuted on Jerry’s first solo record in 1972, but wasn’t played live by the Grateful Dead until 1976. From 1977 onward, it was generally (but not always) a song that came out of Drums, and a bit later, Space. The introduction to the song on Jerry’s solo record includes some of Jerry’s best recorded pedal steel playing.”
Thanks to the Grateful Dead for the footage!
