The annual period of morning, reflection and gratitude for Jerry Garcia, dubbed “The Days Between” has come to an end with the passing of August 9—the anniversary of Jerry’s death. Warren Haynes, who never knew Jerry Garcia, but is cosmically and musically linked with the Grateful Dead legend, took the opportunity to pay homage to his fallen hero on the anniversary. Gov’t Mule kicked off the “Days Between” with a tribute to open their Augusta, GA show on Jerry’s 75th birthday. To close “The Days Between,” Warren and the Mule closed their show on the 9th with a tribute to Jerry.
After trotting out some new and old familiar tunes to kick off the show, Warren welcomed Ben Ellman from the opening act Galactic to jam on the classic Elmore James tune “It Hurts Me Too.” The tune was a staple in the Grateful Dead repertoire in the late 60s and early 70s.
The Jerry tribute started in earnest in the latter half of the set when Warren welcomed Galactic drummer Stanton Moore to the stage for “The Other One” jam and the Dead tunes just continued to flow. Rich Vogel, the keyboardist from Galactic joined in the celebration and finished the set with “Dark Star > St. Stephen Jam > Loser > Morning Dew.” Wow.
Warren topped off the show with a “Patchwork Quilt” encore—an ode to Jerry he wrote upon hearing the news of his passing.
