Listen to Dead and Company Bust Out Howlin’ Wolf Covers in Another Gem from Boulder – 6/10/2017 Full Show AUD

Dead and Company set up shop at Folsom Field for the second night in a row and delivered another incredible show. It was going to be tough to top Friday night’s setlist, but the boys made it happen.

A rolling “Truckin'” opener gave way to a pair of hypnotic Howlin’ Wolf covers—”Smokestack Lightnin'” into “Spoonful.” The blues standards play right into Mayer’s wheel house and Weir’s howlin’ vocals.

Other highlights from the first set include a beautiful “Friend of the Devil” and a killer “Brown Eyed Women.” Actually, the entire first set was gold.

As with the night before, Boulder was treated to just a jaw-dropping second set. Dead and Co opened set two with a “Help>Slip>Frank” for the ages, followed by a “China Doll” with Oteil on vocals that will give you goosebumps. A delicate but powerful “Stella Blue” spilled out of “Dark Star>Drums>Space.” The set was capped off with “China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider” and the obligatory “One More Saturday Night” encore.

Listen to Dead and Company’s Shining Performance at Shoreline Amphitheatre – 6/3/2017 Full Show AUD

Dead and Company’s fifth tour stop of the 2017 summer tour landed them in Mountain View, CA at the famed Shoreline Amphitheatre. Bobby, John and the boys busted out plenty of tour debuts on night one of two at Shoreline.

Shortly before the show, the news of the terror attacks in London broke and Mayer tweeted that the show last night was dedicated to London.

As the first set unfolded it was clear—Dead and Company has hit their stride. Some of the highlights from the first set include “Viola Lee Blues” and “Here Comes Sunshine.” While a lot of focus is placed on Bobby and John, Oteil and Jeff are emerging as indispensable parts of this band. Oteil finally got his turn at lead vocals last night and Jeff keyboards are becoming a cornerstone of Dead and Company shows.

The second set was really something to behold. The opening “China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider, “China Doll,” and “Eyes of the World” was incredible. Things started to get weird during “Drums > Space” when Mickey started playing the … clogs.

Watch Dead and Company Kick Off Summer 2017 Tour in Las Vegas – 5/27/2017 Full Show VID

While Phil and Friends finished up a two-night run at the Cap on the East Coast, Bob Weir, John Mayer and the rest of Dead and Company kicked off their highly anticipated second summer tour in Vegas. Dead & Co have 20 shows scheduled this summer, spanning from Mountain View, CA to Boston, MA.

For the first time back on stage since Dead and Company’s last summer tour, the boys sound excellent. Despite the nearly 9 months since sharing the stage together, Mayer, Bobby and Oteil have been busy touring and playing Dead tunes with various other bands.

The first set opened with a fitting “The Music Never Stopped” and set the tone for the rest of the evening.

The news of Gregg Allman’s death hit shortly before Dead and Company’s show yesterday and the boys paid tribute with a “Midnight Rider” tease during “I Know You Rider” and a heartfelt “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” encore with the Allman Brothers logo behind them on the display.

40th Anniversary of Barton Hall: Listen to the Betty Board of the Historic Grateful Dead Show at Cornell University – 5/8/1977 Full Show AUD

Any Grateful Dead fan has at some point has listened to the Barton Hall show in the Spring 1977. Some prefer other Spring 1977 shows or other eras of the Dead, but most agree that something magical was going on that night. The show has reached such mythical proportions that the Grateful Dead finally did the show it’s due justice and released it earlier this week as part of a larger box set featuring an incredible run of shows from 5/5/1977 to 5/9/1977 entitled May 1977: Get Shown the Light. Variations of the box set, including a Cornell only 3-disc set can be streamed on Spotify or any of the other major streaming services.

So why all the fuss about the Cornell show? Here are some of the testimonials that the Dead have culled from the hundreds of reviews of the show:

“…the single best rock performance anywhere, anytime, by anyone.”

“There was just some kind of magical connection this night between the band members and the band and the audience – some texture, or some type of cosmic or celestial force is in the room.”

“This show is, was, and always will be Mecca.”

But the real proof is in the pudding. Sit back with your favorite beverage and enjoy this excellent Betty Board matrix of the show. Some of the better known highlights include possibly the best “Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain” of all time and “Morning Dew,” but the entire show from the opening energetic “New Minglewood Blues” to the “One More Saturday Night” encore is pure gold. A couple of other stand outs of the show include “Brown Eyed Women,” “Dancin’ in the Streets” and “Jack Straw.”

Leading up to the release of May 1977: Get Shown the Light, the Dead did a mini-documentary of the show featuring interviews from fans who attended the show. The first hand accounts of the show really are magical.

Listen to Joe Russo’s Almost Dead’s Incredible Brooklyn Bowl Run Finale – 3/11/2017 Full Show SBD

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead just finished up it’s first of two runs at the Brooklyn Bowl over a two-week period. The first run featured three blistering nights of Grateful Dead tunes, other assorted covers, plenty of teases, a few debuts and the first JRAD original song. The three shows also marked shows #100, #101 and #102.

The final night was packed with teases and jams galore. JRAD debuted a cover of the WOLF! tune “Chuckles” and The Champs classic “Tequila.” How about Marco’s epic piano solo during “Tennessee Jed” that breaks into “Chopsticks”? Joe and the gang were even able to weave “Summer Nights” from the Grease soundtrack into the second set. The musicianship from these guys simply cannot be topped.

Thanks as always to Peter Costello & Eric McRoberts for the excellent soundboard matrix recording. As Peter said on the JRAD Facebook page, “Incredible night – great vibe, great energy, high “X-Factor” level from start to finish. Really can’t ask for or say much more.”
