The next stop on the We Will Get By Streaming Tour brings us to the summer of 1976. On July 12, 1976 the Dead kicked off a six night run at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco. These six shows would be the only they would play in July.

As a rare treat, the soundcheck was recording and filmed unbeknownst to Jerry and the rest of the Dead.

As for the show itself, checkout the “Minglewood Blues” bust-out, a great version of “Lazy Lightning > Supplication,” the “China Cat” teases during “Franklin’s Tower,” and a beautiful “Wharf Rat.”

First Listen: New Matrix of the Grateful Dead’s Classic ’78 Show in Jacksonville, FL – 4/8/2019 SBD Matrix

A new matrix recording has surfaced of the Grateful Dead show from April 8th, 1978 in Jacksonville, FL. In the spring of ’78 the Dead did a three night run of shows in Florida that ended with one at the Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum.

1978 is often over looked because of the Dead’s legendary 1977 shows. This is a gem from ’78 that includes an absolutely monster second set. Check out the “Samson and Delilah” in particular.

Listen to Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Debut Motorhead

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead kicked off a three night run at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY on Friday night. The run at the Cap is followed by a month off until JRAD hits the road for their winter tour.

The Grateful Dead tribute band usually sticks to Dead tunes and the covers that the Dead covered during their 30 year tenure. Aside from teases, a full-on cover of say, Motorhead is a rarity for JRAD. Russo and his band went full-on Motorhead with a debut of “Fast and Loose” at the Cap on Friday night.

JRAD powered on from an amazing performance last night at the Brooklyn Bowl for their fifth show of a six-show run. Joe Russo and the gang had another card up their sleeve to bring the fire again-John Mayer.

Mayer is making these Brooklyn Bowl sit-ins with JRAD a habit. Last year, Mayer sat in during JRAD’s fall run in Brooklyn as well.

The Dead and Company guitarist is in between his solo gigs and the November Dead and Co tour. With just a few weeks before the Dead and Co MSG dates, Johnny Lightning is getting refocused on playing the Dead and what better way to do it than with JRAD?

Mayer’s sit-in started at the end of the first set with one of his signature “Althea” jams and continued into the beginning of the second set with a massive “Jam > Here Comes Sunshine” and a dirty “New Minglewood Blues.” Mayer makes one of the most exciting bands in the land somehow a little more exciting to watch.

After retreating backstage, Mayer came out for the encore which started with the extraordinary Marco Benevento soloing and segued into “Such a Night > Franklin’s Tower.”

40th Anniversary of Barton Hall: Listen to the Betty Board of the Historic Grateful Dead Show at Cornell University – 5/8/1977 Full Show AUD

Any Grateful Dead fan has at some point has listened to the Barton Hall show in the Spring 1977. Some prefer other Spring 1977 shows or other eras of the Dead, but most agree that something magical was going on that night. The show has reached such mythical proportions that the Grateful Dead finally did the show it’s due justice and released it earlier this week as part of a larger box set featuring an incredible run of shows from 5/5/1977 to 5/9/1977 entitled May 1977: Get Shown the Light. Variations of the box set, including a Cornell only 3-disc set can be streamed on Spotify or any of the other major streaming services.

So why all the fuss about the Cornell show? Here are some of the testimonials that the Dead have culled from the hundreds of reviews of the show:

“…the single best rock performance anywhere, anytime, by anyone.”

“There was just some kind of magical connection this night between the band members and the band and the audience – some texture, or some type of cosmic or celestial force is in the room.”

“This show is, was, and always will be Mecca.”

But the real proof is in the pudding. Sit back with your favorite beverage and enjoy this excellent Betty Board matrix of the show. Some of the better known highlights include possibly the best “Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain” of all time and “Morning Dew,” but the entire show from the opening energetic “New Minglewood Blues” to the “One More Saturday Night” encore is pure gold. A couple of other stand outs of the show include “Brown Eyed Women,” “Dancin’ in the Streets” and “Jack Straw.”

Leading up to the release of May 1977: Get Shown the Light, the Dead did a mini-documentary of the show featuring interviews from fans who attended the show. The first hand accounts of the show really are magical.
