The Brooklyn Bowl invited Rabbi Daniel Brenner to host the annual Rosh Hashana services this week. Brooklyn Bowl’s annual tradition, dubbed Bowl Hashana included an intimate performance by two artists who are no stranger to the Bowl—Eric Krasno and Leslie Mendelson.
After services, Krasno and Mendelson played a short and beautiful acoustic set. The set included a couple of Jewish standards like Hava Nagila and Avinu Malkeinu, plus plenty of covers that were a head-nod to the holiday. The duo even managed to tuck in the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil” towards the end of the set. It’s safe to say that this is most likely the first time in 5,779 years that “Friend of the Devil” was performed at Rosh Hashana services.
Fun fact: Eric Krasno’s grandfather, Lou Krasno, was the violinist and frontman of the renowned klezmer and gypsy jazz combo the Gypsy Gems.
