Update: Full show AUD thanks to Jeff Travitz!

After an abrupt stop to their tour last year on account of Mayer’s appendicitis, Dead and Company made their first appearance of 2018. Last night kicked off their Playing in the Sand extended weekend in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Three nights of Dead and Co on the warm shores of the Caribbean in February – does it get better?

With John Perry Barlow’s death fresh in the minds and hearts of all Dead fans, last night was a perfect opportunity to pay homage to the legendary Grateful Dead lyricist.

Tucked into the second set, after a crazy Space featuring John Mayer, Mickey Hart and Jeff Chimenti all on keys, Dead and Co. settled into a beautiful, heart-felt rendition of “Looks Like Rain.” Barlow’s image appeared on the screens behind the band as Weir belted out the heart-wrenching lyrics that JPB penned back in 1972.

As should be expected by now, Dead and Company looked in tip-top shape. Looks like 2018 is going to another year to be Grateful for!

Listen to Los Lobos Rock Hendrix Cover and More on USS Iowa Battleship – 9/1/2017 Full Show AUD

Los Lobos more bluesy alter-ego, Dos Lobos is comprised of Los Lobos members David Hidalgo on guitar, accordion and vocals and Cesar Rosas on guitar and vocals with the added support of Enrique “Bugs” Gonzales on drums, percussion and Juan Perez on bass. On September 1st, Dos Lobos made their way to Fleet Week in San Pedro, CA as part of a larger bill that included 80’s rockers Quiet Riot.

According to the taper of the show, voodoostrat, “when Dave walked on stage he was facing three full Marshall stacks. The guys showed up with only guitars. The look on Dave’s face when he realized he had to use the Marshall amps was priceless… he was like a kid at Guitar Center.”

The show was on the bow of the USS Iowa Battleship—a unique venue to say the least.

Los Lobos mixed up the show with plenty of originals, traditional songs and covers. Among the covers, was a blazing version of Jimi Hendrix’s classic “Little Wing.”

Listen to Jeff Chimenti Join Joe Russo’s Almost Dead at the Green River Festival – 7/16/2017 Full Show AUD

After a stint on the NJ shore boardwalk with Holly Bowling, Tom Hamilton reunited with Joe Russo and some new faces for Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. Jon Shaw subbed for Dave Dreiwitz on bass who is still on tour with Ween and Dead and Company keyboardist subbed in for Marco Benevento.

JRAD shared the bill with Infamous Stringdusters & Funky Meters among other acts. You could call the show a warm-up for the two-night run at the Capitol Theater JRAD is kicking off this weekend, but the set with Chimenti on keys was straight fire.

According to Peter Costello’s box score from the show, there was plenty of teases, but the comments revealed some Hendrix tucked in there along with “The Wheel” teases. Give it a listen and see if you can spot anything he missed.

Dead and Company turned the wagon around and headed back west to Chicago for their final two shows of the summer tour. Lucky for Cleveland, Blossom Music Center is just a few miles away from route 80 and a perfect pit stop en route to Wrigley. Lucky for everyone not in Cleveland, Dead and Company and Nugs.tv tossed up a free last minute livestream of the entire show!

There really isn’t more to write about this band other than they have totally gelled and become their own band. Their dedication to their craft and the Grateful Dead cannon is evident in every show they play. Just read what John Mayer posted on Instagram the night before the Cleveland show:

Every night I pick up the guitar, I play in hopes of making that perfect statement. I can feel it in my heart, and I can hear it in my head. But I usually find that my playing falls just short of my intentions. It's that space between the intention and the expression that I'm trying to close distance on. Looking back, I know I haven't played that show yet. But tomorrow? I feel like the very essence of the Grateful Dead is that the perfect show is right around the corner and tonight’s show could be it. That and simply to have a good time.

One aspect of Dead and Company’s shows I’ve neglected to focus on this summer is Jeff Chimenti’s brilliant work on the keyboards. Jeff really is the unsung hero of Dead and Company.

Some of the highlights from the show include Mayer’s tasty licks on Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo, the entire amphitheater and lawn rocking out to “Big River,” a Johnny Cash tune that is nearly 60 years old, an especially weird and far our “Drums” and a gorgeous “Black Muddy River” encore.
