Watch Billy Strings Rocking Covers of “Funky Bitch,” “Paranoid” and More in Cambridge

Billy Strings and his band have been making waves on their latest northeast tour. With Billy’s undeniable guitar talents and choice covers, Billy Strings has been the hot ticket this fall.

A couple of weeks ago, Billy stopped at the Sinclair in Cambridge, MA. Among his originals, Billy also jammed on some classic blues and rock tunes. Billy’s covers for Cambridge included Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch” (Phish has been rocking “Funky Bitch” since the early 90s), Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid,” Elmore James’ “It Hurts Me Too,” and James Gangs’ “Funk #49.”

First Listen: Phish’s Soundcheck from Legendary Dayton ’97 Show – 12/7/1997 SBD

1997 is arguable the best Phish vintage in existence. The crew is firing on all cylinders and is at peak Phish 1.0. While there are plenty of gems from ’97, Phish’s show from December 7th, 1997 in Dayton ranks among the top. Don’t take my word for it—Phish.net ranks the show at the Nutter Center 13th of all time.

While most band’s soundchecks are forgettable, Phish soundchecks have a quality difficult to pinpoint. My favorite Phish soundcheck is easily the 46-minute improvised Magnaball soundcheck.

The P-fish treated the soundcheck at the Nutter Center back in December of ’97 more like a mini-set. Trey, Mike, Page and Fish played some covers including Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie On Reggae Woman,” Zeppel’s “The Rover,” and Ween’s “The Stallion.” They also did some teases and gags before the big show.

1) 00:00 “Boogie On Reggae Woman” (Stevie Wonder cover)
2) 07:25 “Funky Bitch” (Trey on lead vocals)
3) 12:56 “I’ll Be Around” (The Spinners cover, snippet)
4) 18:47 “For No Reason Here’s Apu” (from The Simpsons)
5) 19:59 “Demand” (snippet)
6) 20:26 “My Mind’s Got A Mind Of Its Own” (Butch Hancock cover)
7) 24:15 “The Stallion (Pt. 3)” (Ween cover, snippet)
8) 26:05 “The Rover” (Led Zeppelin cover)
9) 29:10 “Limb By Limb” (snippet, Fishman only)

Listen to Phish’s Full 2019 Run at Dicks – 8/30/2019 to 9/1/2019 AUD

One of the most anticipated weekends of the year for Phish fans is Labor Day and their annual three-night run at Dicks Sporting Park in Commerce Park outside of Denver, CO.

This year’s festivities were nearly sidelined by prairie dogs with the plague in the neighboring Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. While the shows went off without a hitch, camping and vending was canceled. The Phish community didn’t let this obscurity become a footnote, rather plague prairie dog memes and merch have flourished. Phish even got in on the action and kicked off night three with “Stray Dog” but changed the lyrics to “Plague Dog.”

Over the three nights, Phish shared rarities, deep jams, classic tunes, new Kasvot Vaxt and Ghosts of the Forest tunes. They made us laugh, cry and everything in between.

Listen to Phish Rage on Night Two of Alpine Valley – 7/13/2019 AUD

Phish returned to Alpine Valley Music Theater for the penultimate show of their 2019 summer tour. After a killer night one, all eyes were on the Phish from Vermont to see what they could deliver on night two.

Fears that the boys dropped all the hits on night one were quickly alleviated with a rockin’ “AC/DC Bag.” The big jam of the first set was a 12-minute plus “Blaze On.” Phish, who had teased the Face Plant Into Rock sample throughout the tour, dropped the Kasvot Vaxt tune “The Final Hurrah” near the end of the set then finished Alpine off with “Character Zero.”

In the second set, Trey, Mike, Page and Fish went deep with a couple of phan phavorites including “Runaway Jim,” “Ghost,” “Golden Age” and “Harry Hood.”

The second Kasvot Vaxt tune “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.” of the evening sat comfortably in the encore spot.

Listen to Phish Kick Off Merriweather Post Pavilion Run – 6/22/2019 AUD

Phish arrived in Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD for the first of two nights last night.

The P-fish came out swinging at Merriweather last night. “Tube” with some jam was in the second spot of the first set. Other highlights of the first set include a rare “David Bowie” and a perfect “The Squirming Coil” closer.

The second set opened with a “Ghost” which is always a great way to get things started. A few songs deep into the second set, Trey and Mike faced off in “Death Don’t Hurt Very Long,” a Kasvot tune that is downright dirty. Phish also treated Merriweather to “Harry Hood” later in the set.
