Listen to Dead and Company Honor Students in Sunrise, Florida – 2/26/2018 Full Show AUD

Dead and Company made their second make-up date in Sunrise, Florida earlier this week at the BB&T Center outside of Ft. Lauderdale. The concert was close to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the high school that suffered one of the worst school-shootings in US history just two weeks ago. Dead and Company dedicated their performance to the students, teachers, and staff of the school. As the show went on, each of the member of the band donned a Marjory Stoneman Douglas t-shirt.

The school shooting hit especially close to home for Oteil who calls Southern Florida home.

The show’s highlights included a “They Love Each Other” for the ages, Bobby singing “The Weight,” a subtle but intense “Dark Star” and a dark, swampy “Drums > Space.”

Listen to Holly Bowling Bust Out a Haunting “No Quarter” at The Old Church – 9/27/2017 Full Show SBD

Classically trained pianist, Holly Bowling got her footing in the jam scene with her spirited and brilliant interpretations of Phish songs for the piano. After a couple of years digging into the Phish archive and touring, she started to reimagine the Grateful Dead catalogue for the piano.

This past Wednesday, at her gig in Portland this past Wednesday, Holly added the Led Zeppelin classic “No Quarter” to her show. According to the setlist archive at Phantasy Tour, Holly played “No Quarter” way back in January also. The Zeppelin tune is a good segue for Bowling into the expansive Page, Plant, Bonham and Jones catalogue because it is Phish’s go to Zeppelin cover.

Needless to say, Holly nails the Zeppelin cover as well as the rest of the show in one of the most intimate and sacred music halls in the country.

Listen to Dead and Company’s Magnificent Wrigley Field Finale – 7/1/2017 Full Show AUD

Dead and Company completed their terrific summer tour last night at Wrigley Field in Chicago. After an incredible show the night before, it was hard to imagine them topping the performance. I’ll let you be the judge of how the show stacked up.

Out of the gates, Mayer led the crew in a smoking “Cold Rain and Snow” which has become a staple of Dead and Company shows. In listening to the top versions of “Cold Rain and Snow” that the Dead performed, it’s easy to see Dead and Co’s performances stack up against the best of the Grateful Dead’s versions.

Oteil graced Wrigley with lead vocals on “Ship of Fools.” Mayer started out and let Oteil take over the vocals much to the delight of the audience.

Next, Dead and Co reprised the acoustic Dark Star they debuted a couple of weeks ago at Fenway. The gorgeous acoustic version gave way to “Friend of the Devil” before Dead and Co switched from acoustic to electric for an “Althea” for the ages.

The second set kicked off with a “Sugar Magnolia” and delivered hit after hit including “Dancing in the Streets,” “Scar>Fire,” “The Other One,” a hauntingly beautiful “Days Between” into a fitting “Not Fade Away” to end the second set.

Bobby and company came out for one final “Brokedown Palace” and then passed on the “Playin’ in the Band” reprise to pick up where they started the second set—”Sunshine Daydream (Sugar Magnolia Reprise).”

What a show! What a tour! What a band!

Here’s hoping for a fall tour!

Listen to Dead and Company’s Epic Second Night at Fenway Park – 6/18/2017 Full Show AUD

Dead and Company is chugging along on all cylinders and pumping one amazing show after another this summer tour. For me, I think this second show at Fenway was the pinnacle of the tour so far. The only thing missing from the show was Johnny’s checkered outfit from last year’s Fenway show.

Unless are living under a rock, you have heard by now that Bobby and the boys busted out a historical acoustic version of “Dark Star.” On Facebook and Reddit, there was been a lot of back and forth on whether this was the first ever acoustic “Dark Star” or not. From what I can gather, the Grateful Dead never did an acoustic version, but Bobby did a handful of times with Ratdog, the Weir Robinson Greene trio and other arrangements. Never the less, this was a rare performance and a debut for Dead and Company for sure.

As if the acoustic “Dark Star” wasn’t enough, Dead and Co reprised it, electric style in the second set!

Other highlights include the acoustic “Ripple” to close the first set, a blistering “Truckin'” which has become a staple of Dead and Co shows, Oteil singing lead of “Fire on the Mountain,” Drums featuring Oteil (this guy can do it all!), the “The Eleven” tease out of Dark Star in the second set, Bobby singing a beautiful “Days Between” and a “Brokedown Palace” that will bring you to tears.

Dead and Company has only seven more shows this summer tour. It’s hard to imagine them topping this one, but I wouldn’t put it past them.
