The Grateful Dead announced their latest box set—Listen to the River: St. Louis ’71, ’72, ’73. The 20 CD box set spans 7 shows that the Dead performed in St. Louis between 1971 and 1973.
To celebrate the announcement of the box set, the Dead have released a spectacular “Sugaree” from December 10, 1971. Here are the notes on the performance, “Debuting a little more than four months earlier, Sugaree would be a very common first set song for the Grateful Dead 1971-1974, and would return in an expanded capacity when the Dead returned to touring in 1976, with some versions over the next 20 years clocking it at more than 15 minutes. This is the classic, early arrangement as Jerry would record it shortly after this performance for his solo debut album in 1972.”
Thanks to the Grateful Dead for the recording!
