Gov’t Mule continued their spring tour in upstate New York earlier this week. The Palace Theater in Albany is a staple of any northeast Mule tours worth its salt.
As with nearly all the shows of this tour, harmonica extraordinaire Hook Herrera came out to join the Mule for a couple of tunes. Albany was also treated to another guest, Reeves Gabrels, guitarist for The Cure among other titles for a few songs.
While the Allman Brothers Band DNA runs deep in Gov’t Mule and Warren Haynes especially, the Mule leaned heavy on their ABB roots at the Palace Theater. “Game Face” has been a trustworthy vehicle for delivering a healthy dose of “Mountain Jam” for Mule. To close out the first set, Warren slipped a “Les Brers In A Minor” tease in “I’m a Ram.”
Another ABB tease came in the second set during “Kind of Bird” with a taste of “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.” To cap off the show, Mule brought both Herrera and Gabrels back out for a second encore to jam on the ABB classic “Statesboro Blues.”
