The latest stop on the Smokin’ Mule tour brought Gov’t Mule and Blackberry Smoke to the Brenton Skating Plaza, in Des Moines, Iowa. Luckily taper Brad Shears was there and got a pristine recording of a smokin’ show!
Anytime Warren opens with “John the Revelator”, you know you are in for a good show. One of my favorite tracks of the evening was a gritty “Game Face” that had Birdland and Mountain Jam teases tucked in the middle.
As with all the other shows this tour, Charlie Starr came out for some great covers of classic songs. Des Moines was treated to performances of “Jesus Gonna Be Here” by Tom Waits and “Jesus Just Left Chicago” by ZZ Top. You know Warren means business when he busts out the megaphone.
Speaking of ZZ Top, Mule will be touring with them in September. Jesus, please let the epic encores continue on that leg of the tour!
Thanks again to Brad Shears for the great recording and to Heath Robson for the great photo!
