The Grateful Dead are back with another installment of their never ending YouTube series All the Years Live. The latest footage comes from the legendary Winterland Ballroom during their New Years Eve run there in 1978.

The Dead tucked the classic “Friend of the Devil” into the first set during their show on 12/31/1978. Here is what Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux notes about the performance, “One of the few Grateful Dead songs that underwent a dramatic restructuring, with this new arrangement becoming the song’s structure from 1976 onward. From its country/bluegrass roots on American Beauty, this Closing Of Winterland masterpiece highlights how good it could be as a ballad, hitting a few major peaks before it’s beautiful ending.”

Thanks to the Grateful Dead for the footage!
