Listen to George Porter Jr. Pay Tribute to Robert Hunter with “They Love Each Other” in Oxford

George Porter Jr. and Runin’ Pardners’ tour brought them to Proud Larry;s in Oxford, Mississippi this past weekend. Oxford is home to Fat Possum Records which discovered The Black Keys and claimed blues legends such as R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough among it’s artists.

For the encore, George Porter Jr. paid tribute to Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter with a rendition of “They Love Each Other.”

Porter introduced the song by saying “I have been playing a lot of these Grateful Dead shows lately, and I’ve run into a couple of songs that I really like that Mr. Hunter actually wrote for the band.”

Listen to Dead and Company’s Jazzy Night One at the Mothership – 11/8/2019 AUD

Dead and Company’s mini Fall Fun Run pulled into it’s final stop last night—Hampton, VA. While the Grateful Dead played at the Hampton Coliseum 21 times from 1979 to 1992, Dead and Company officially made their debut there last night.

Often referred to as the Mothership, Dead & Co’s poster from last night featured the Coliseum as a spaceship.

Dead and Co kicked off the first set with a “Bertha” that got the dance party started. Bobby and the crew traded “Shakedown Street”‘s typical breakneck funk for more of a jazzy swagger that pervaded the rest of the two sets.

While all the band members are firing on all cylinders, Dead and Company keyboardist Jeff Chimenti was really on fire last night.

John and Jeff built on the jazzy evening with riffing on Roger and Hammerstein’s “My Favorite Things” out of “Space.”

Update: Listen to John Mayer’s Blazing Sit-in With Joe Russo’s Almost Dead in LA – 11/9/2018 Full Show SBD

Update: Thanks to Eric McRoberts and Peter Costello for the SBD Matrix of this awesome show!!

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead are halfway through their final run of 2018. Russo and his crew played two nights at the Wiltern in Los Angeles and are heading north to Oakland for a pair of shows in Oakland.

Dead and Company guitarist, John Mayer made a surprise appearance for the second set and encore. Introduced as “Instagram’s John Mayer,” Johnny Lightning didn’t take any time getting warmed up. Half way through “The Wheel,” Mayer busted out an ethereal, face-melting solo that set the tone for the rest of the evening.

Watch John Mayer Sit-In with JRAD for “Althea,” “New Minglewood Blues,” & More at Brooklyn Bowl – 10/13/2017 Full Show AUD

While Mayer has blossomed into one of the scene’s best guitarists, his role in Dead and Company doesn’t lend it’s self to a lot of experimenting. JRAD on the other hand is all about experimenting, getting far out there and jamming the hell out of Grateful Dead tunes. It’s a treat to see Mayer open up along side one of the best jam bands on tour today.
