Got the summertime blues? Go on a long, strange tour with me through time. Every day in the month of July, we’ll feature a vintage recording from the Dead. Tune in on YouTube and join the chat as we explore the wonders of summer tours past. We will get by, we will survive!
The next stop on the We Will Get By Streaming Tour comes from summer of 72. After the Dead’s historic European tour in 72, they would come back and play a single show out west at the Hollywood Bowl, which would also be Pigpen’s final. A month later, the boys ventured out east for a pair of gigs—one in Hartford and the second in Jersey City on July 18th, 1972.
The set is a smoker from start to finish. The first set busts out of the gates with a ton of energy and carries through the entire three sets. Fireworks were set off at the end of the first set during “Casey Jones” and through the first set break.
The main course of the evening came during the second set with meaty 27 minute “Dark Star” that crashed into a beautiful “Comes a Time.” This is early 70s Dead at it’s best.
