The Tree of Life series in Montville, NJ has been a hotbed for musicians this summer and fall. The latest show comes from The Shady Recruits featuring guitar slinger Marcus King with a special guest appearance by Leslie Mendelson.

Playing with a new crew, King focused mainly on covers over the two sets and there were some doozies. Tell me you don’t get a smile on your face within two minutes of the opening “Boogie on Raggae Woman” jam.

Listen to Marcus King and The Cleaner’s Hot Jam Cruise Set – 1/16/2019 AUD

One of the reasons, if not THE reason to go on Jam Cruise is for the scheduled (and those that are not) collaborations. One of the scheduled, must-see line-ups was The Cleaners—an all-star band including Marcus King, Eric Krasno, Duane Trucks, Deshawn Alexander and Kevin Scott.

The Cleaners raged late night at Panic En La Playa last year as well.

The Cleaners got the party started over at the Spinnaker Lounge aboard the Norwegian Jade on the evening of the 16th. Their short, but rip-roaring set included Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Sly and the Family Stone, The Band and Funkadelic covers among others.

While The Cleaners was on the schedule, a surprise sit in from Brandon “Taz” Niederauer was not. Taz sat in on the last song for a fiery “Them Changes.”

Listen to Marcus King Band Jam on “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” in Vermont – 11/23/2018 Full Show AUD

The Marcus King Band, featuring one of the scene’s most talented young guitarists and the band’s namesake, Marcus King is back on the road. MKB released Carolina Confessions in October and have been out on the road supporting their new album.

On Friday night King and his crew traveled up to Higher Ground in Burlington, Vermont for an impressive two+ hour set of blistering music. The 22-song set included older MKB classics like “Rita is Gone” and “Thespian Espionage” as well plenty of tunes off the new album. King also treated Burlington to a couple of covers including Sly and Family Stones’ “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” and the Allman Brothers Band epic “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.”

Listen to Marcus King Band Cover The Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers & Beatles in Chicago

Marcus King Band, featuring the 21-year old guitar prodigy Marcus King, hit up SPACE located in Evanston, just outside Chicago proper. MKB treated Chi-town to nearly two hours of their brand of blues and soul.

In addition to soon to be classic originals like “Thespian Espionage,” Marcus King and his band did searing renditions of the Grateful Dead’s “Fire on the Mountain,” Allman Brothers Band “Dreams,” The Temptations’ “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” with a nod to Jimi Hendrix’s “Third Stone From The Sun” and The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby.” King’s crisp guitar licks and sharp tone breathe new life into these classic tunes.

Watch Marcus King Band and Eric Krasno Annihilate “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” at Island Exodus 8 in Jamaica

People may have journeyed to Runaway Bay, Jamaica because they were Gov’t Mule fans, but they left Island Exodus Marcus King Band fans. MKB’s sets and King’s guest appearances were among the many highlights of the long-weekend excursion.

For one of the opening sets of the event, Marcus King Band welcomed Eric Krasno from Soulive for the balance of the set. The potent guitar duo of King and Krasno bared their raw talent on this blistering cover of The Temptation’s “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”
