Listen to the Grateful Dead’s Universal City Show on This Date in 1973 – 7/1/1973 SBD

The first selection on the We Will Get By Streaming Tour is from July 1, 1973. While the later shows in ’73 get a lot of attention, this stop at the Universal Amphitheater in Universal City, CA withstands the test of time. Listen for the absolutely sublime “China > Rider” to close out the first set.

The second set kicks off with an enormous 26+ minute “Playing in the Band.” A few songs later, the Dead ease into an early version of “Loose Lucy” which has a much different strut and swagger than later versions. As if the 26+ minute PITB wasn’t heady enough, Jerry and the boys went the distant towards the end of the set with a 21+ minute version of “The Other One.”

Watch the Grateful Dead’s Show from the Shoreline in Fall of 1987 – 10/2/1987 Video

After a week off, the Grateful Dead kept the music rolling last night with their Shakedown Stream YouTube concert. Last night’s selection came from the fall of 1987 at the Shoreline Amphitheater.

This week’s pre-show with Dave and Gary featured Widepsread Panic bassist Dave Schools and founding member of Circles Around the Sun Adam MacDougall. The conversation centered around Neal Casal and the upcoming tribute to the deceased CATS guitarist. There was an awesome anecdote shared on the show about the time that Neal Casal introduced “Cinnamon Girl” to Derek Trucks for the first time. Neal, shocked that Trucks had never heard the legendary Neil Young jam asked how Trucks was just hearing it for the first time. Trucks responded that his dad didn’t allow Neil Young to be played in the house growing up.

As for the show, this is a great late 80s fall show. Bobby, Jerry and Phil are all on, the entire show. The second set is especially tasty with a “China > Rider” to kick it off and a beautiful “Black Muddy River” encore.

First Look: Watch the Grateful Dead Truck Up to Buffalo in Summer 1990 – 7/16/1990 Video

The Grateful Dead kept the music from stopping for another Friday night during quarantine with unreleased footage from Summer 1990. For their first shakedown stream, the Dead shared their Buffalo summer tour stop from 1989. Last night’s concert was their stop at Buffalo the following summer.

A few of the highlights from the show include Brent delivering the goods on “Blow Away,” an awesome “Let It Grow” and Jerry’s impassioned “Ship of Fools” in the second set.

Watch the Grateful Dead Go the Distance at Foxboro During Summer ’89 – 7/2/1989 Video

We are approaching our third month of quarantine and while some of the country is opening back up, it’s safe to say that the concert experience we know and love will not be back for a long, long time. Luckily, the Grateful Dead have stepped up to the plate and hit a game-saving home run with their weekly Shakedown Stream.

Every Shakedown Stream is proceeded by a Pre-Show interview or chat. None other than Bob Weir appeared with Gary Lambert and David Lemieux during the pre-show to talk about life in quarantine among other topics. Bobby remarked that defunct recordings studio, “TRI is a flying saucer on the tarmac.” Let’s hope we see some more high quality recordings from TRI this summer!

Last night, the Dead share a show from Foxboro, MA during their summer 1989 tour on July 2nd. Mass-heads knew they were in for a treat when a smiling Jerry lead the Dead in an opening “Playin’ in the Band > Crazy Fingers > Wang Dang Doodle” that felt more like a second set jam than a first set opener.

Listen to Dead and Company’s Tour Finale in Boulder – 7/6/2019 AUD

Dead and Company’s summer tour finally pulled into Boulder, CO last week. After Bobby sat-in with his good friend Jackie Greene at Red Rocks on July 4th, he rejoined Dead & Co for they band’s final two shows of the summer at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO.

Bobby, Mayer and the boys fought some fierce weather on night one that interrupted the show. The weather cleared and was beautiful for night two.

Anything that Boulder was cheated out of because of weather on night one, Dead and Company more than made up for it on night two. The boys kicked off the night with a smoking “Scar > Fire” and set two was chock full of hits including “Estimated Prophet,” “Franklin’s Tower,” “Eyes of the World,” “Althea” and “Not Fade Away.”

Bobby and the rest of the company came back out for the encore and thanked the crew for all their hard work on tour. Then Dead & Co treated Boulder to a three-song encore including “Ripple,” “Brokedown Palace” and “Playin’ in the Band Reprise.”
