Gov’t Mule headlined Blues from the Top – a blues festival featuring Larkin Poe, Tab Benoit and more at the scene Winter Park, CO.

During Mule’s Friday night set, they jammed hard on two covers they have officially released—Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was the Ground” and their take on Al Green’s “I’m a Ram.”

Gov’t Mule’s two dates at the Westville Music Bowl, their first times back to the stage since the pandemic, sold out immediately. Shortly thereafter, the Mule announced a special third night featuring their old friend and collaborator Ann Wilson from Heart. I was lucky enough to score tickets to the Sunday night show!

Wilson has joined the Mule on several occasions over the last few years for special Zeppelin sets. It turns out that Ann Wilson can do Robert Plant almost as well as Robert Plant can.

After a short, but rockin’ first set, Ann Wilson emerged with Gov’t Mule in the second set and sat-in on some of the Zeppelin classics like “Immigrant Song,” “Black Dog” and “No Quarter.” As strong as the Zeppelin mini-set was, I think my favorite tune of the evening was Wilson sitting in on her own “Magic Man.” She was born to sing that song.

Uncle Warren lead the Mule in a few more songs before a foot-thumping “32-20 Blues” encore.

After Oteil and Friends broke the New Years run at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester a couple of nights ago. Oteil and his crew traveled down to Upper Darby, right outside of Philly and joined Gov’t Mule last night for the kick off to Mule Years Eve.

Warren, never one to miss an opportunity for a sit-in, joined Oteil and Friends during their opening set. A few of Oteil and Friends’ members returned the favor during Mule’s opening set.

Warren welcomed Melvin Seals, Jennifer Hartswick, and Weedie Braimah from Oteil and Friends along with long-time friend Captain Ron Holloway for the fourth song of the first set.

With the added firepower on the horns from Holloway and Hartswick, Gov’t Mule dove head first into the Little Feat classic, “Spanish Moon.” Captain Ron Holloway and Uncle Warren are no stranger to “Spanish Moon.”

Gov’t Mule continued their massive tour this summer and fall with a monster show at Red Rocks last night. The Mule reprised their Dark Side of the Mule for one of their three sets for the final time this summer.
