Holly Bowling and Umphrey’s McGee crossed paths earlier this week in Grand Rapids, MI. Holly did a UM pre-show set at Founder’s Taproom and then came back out for a post-show set after midnight. While Holly sticks with mainly Dead and Phish songs, she was joined on stage by a very special guest, Umphrey’s McGee keyboardist, Joel Cummins for a UM rarity.

Deep into the late night set, Holly welcomed Joel out for one of the most bizarre tunes you’ll ever hear. The song starts with Holly and Joel howling “Sludge and Death!” over an ominous piano riff. Joel then joins Holly on the grand piano and launch into a wild and blissful jam that turns into the Grateful Dead’s “I Know Your Rider.” It’s a treat to see these two top-notch pianists pounding the keys to one of the all-time greatest Dead songs.
The jam evolves back into “Sludge and Death” before finishing. If “Sludge and Death” isn’t your thing, definitely stay for “I Know You Rider” which starts to take shape around 8:00 in.
Thanks to TheQuinnski for the great front row footage!
