The latest installment from the Grateful Dead’s All the Years Live YouTube series showcases a smokin’ “New Speedway Boogie” from their Giants Stadium show on June 17th, 1991. This is from the same show that was featured in this year’s annual Meet-Up at the Movies.
Here is what Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux had to say about the performance: “Another Garcia-Hunter classic that disappeared from the repertoire for way too long, New Speedway Boogie was gone from 1970 to 1991, when it finally returned in February at the Oakland Coliseum. This bluesy Workingman’s Dead standout stretched out and allowed the Dead to take it to some exciting places.”
In addition to being from the show featured at Meet-Up at the Movies, this show is also part of the new Giant’s Stadium Box Set available for pre-order here. One of the cool things about this particular show is that it’s only one of two shows in the Dead archive to be recorded to 48-track analog tape.
Thanks to the Grateful Dead for the footage!
