Got the summertime blues? Go on a long, strange tour with me through time. Every day in the month of July, we’ll feature a vintage recording from the Dead. Tune in on YouTube and join the chat as we explore the wonders of summer tours past. We will get by, we will survive!
Our next stop on the We Will Get By Streaming tour is a rager, but also a bit of a sad one—it’s Brent Mydland’s last show with the Grateful Dead.
The World Music Theater in Tinley Park, Illinois on July 23, 1990 was the end of one of the Dead’s best tours. It was also keyboardist Brent Mydland’s final show as he would tragically die at the all too young age of 37 just three days later.
The show ends with a cover of The Band’s “The Weight” with Brent singing “I gotta go, but my friends can stick around!” A prophetic last song for the legendary keyboardist for sure.
