Trumpeter and vocalist Jennifer Hartswick, known for her role in the Trey Anastasio Band, is on the road in support of her new album Nexus. Guitarist Nick Cassarino who is featured on the album also has joined Hartswick on the road during her September and October tour dates.
The tour features a very stripped down and intimate display of Hartswick’s talents and introduces the fiery Nick Cassarino to a larger stage as well.
Last night the tour landed at the Rockwood Music Hall in NYC. New York native Trey Anastasio and bass player Christian McBride sat-in for a slow, sultry and jammy version of “Drown in My Own Tears.” The tune is something of a modern jazz/blues standard. “Drown in My Own Tears” was recorded originally in the 51 by Lula Reed and written by Henry Glover. The song has since been recorded and reimagined by Ray Charles, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Derek and the Dominoes with Gregg Allman and Stevie Wonder among dozens other.
Each of the musicians had their turn soloing, each adding their own sound and style to the ageless classic. Trey started out muted and reserved but picked it up towards the end. Jennifer and Nick really shined on the tune.
Thanks to Marc Millman for the awesome front row footage!
