When I heard that Train was going to be performing Led Zeppelin II in it’s entirety at Mountain Jam this year, I thought it was a different train. Then I thought it was a joke. Then I thought what the hell is Warren thinking. Then I thought, alright I’ll give it a chance. Boy am I glad I did.
If you aren’t familiar with Train it’s probably because they are in a completely different musical universe than Led Zeppelin. They won a grammy for their 2001 single “Drops of Jupiter.” You can listen here if you dare.
In searching for fan footage of the performance last night, I came across this great video of Train playing the Zeppelin classic “Black Dog.” Wow. Train lead singer, Pat Monahan does Robert Plant justice and then some. The band is extremely tight and Jimmy Stafford on the double-neck guitar actually does a decent job.
While I am still a bit confused why Train of all bands is doing this, I am glad someone is. As someone who never got to see Zeppelin perform, I would rather see Train perform Zeppelin than never see them. Just my opinion. How about you?
