Eddie Vedder embarked on a solo tour back in 2008 to support his solo album, Into the Wild Soundtrack. In addition to playing songs off that album, he played plenty of Pearl Jam originals and covers. A couple of nights were filmed and compiled into a DVD titled Water on the Road.
The Rolling Stones YouTube channel just released footage from this DVD of Eddie Vedder and Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty playing the hell out of the Bob Dylan classic “All Along the Watchtower.” There are literally hundreds of “All Along the Watchtower” done by countless artists like Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Stevie Ray Vaughn , Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young to name just a few.
What stands out about this performance is the raw emotion and power that Eddie Vedder is able to channel through music. Vedder does his best effort to emulate Dylan taking on the guitar, vocals and harmonica section of the song. While there is no soaring solo or fancy guitar work, Eddie’s soulful vocals and impassioned playing will keep you glued to the screen.
